Topic: Friendly Input/Output names also reflected into DAW

Hello!

So here's another question:

I love how you can rename the generic Analog 1/2, AES, ADAT 1,2,3,4 etc names with something that makes sense with your TotalMix routings.

My question is:

Can these friendly names be reflected also inside the DAW? This would help a lot.

Thanks

Yes, by entering it manually, as there is no automatic way. And I have doubts that this would ever be done. As this would require changes in the driver and in each DAW so that the DAW can differentiate channel name and long description.

Each DAW handles/reads/stores the channel names different/independent and in different files/schemes.

Re: Friendly Input/Output names also reflected into DAW

On the Mac at least, the CoreAudio framework provides mechanisms for the driver to present “Friendly” I/O channel names to the OS, and on to the DAW.

As far as I know, only MOTU actually took the time to implement this in their drivers as I use this feature all the time. Updating my AVB matrix automatically updates the channel friendly names to the OS, and my DAW (Logic) always shows the current names without having to manually enter them. I only name them once - at the actual input or output. AVB matrix routing sends the patched name to the Driver and to Logic.

If only RME, with their clearly superior audio quality, would implement this feature in their driver for TotalMix. That would be a game-changer for me.

Also now that I know more about the RME ecosystem I should move that post into this forum.
