From ADI-2 DAC’s manual page 4:
ADI-2 DACs with AK4493 and ES9028Q2M are neither sonically nor visually easily distinguishable. However, the ESS version is recognized by a small C at the end of the serial number sticker (B stood for AKM 4493). Furthermore, the units differ in the available filters. The unit with AKM has a filter called Short Delay Low Dispersion, while the one with ESS has a filter called Brickwall (the other filters, SD Sharp, SD Slow, Sharp, Slow, NOS, are identical). Further Chip dependent differences are mentioned in this manual.
But now we wish you exquisite listening pleasure and a lot of fun with the ADI-2 DAC!
I don’t now about any Serial No. / year coding, but the final letter might give a little hint.
Now you can delete the other 3 dublicated postings please!
There was never an ADI-2 DAC, you have an ADI-2 DAC FS.
From this table you can see, that around 06/21 those devices started to get ESS converters:

You can check it according to the D/A filter which are available, if there is "Brickwall" (no SD_LD) then it is ESS.
It it doesn't have DA filter Brickwall, but "SD LD" instead, then it has either AK4490 or AK4493 as converter.
You can distinguish it that way.
If the device
- comes with the normal remote, then you have the initial model from 12/2017 with AK4490,
- was shipped with the newer MRC, then you have the next model from 11/19 with AK4493.
"SD LD" instead, then it has either AK4490 or AK4493 as converter.
IIRC, SD LD is present only on the AK4493 variant.
There was never an ADI-2 DAC, you have an ADI-2 DAC FS.
I think ADI-2 DAC denomination is enough to identify the model, opposed to “ADI-2”, “ADI-2 FS” and others that come up quite often in the forum.
Side question: anyone knows why the forum time is GMT+2 / UTC+2, which would be located at East Europe / Middle and South Africa?
EDIT: or is it MESZ - Middle European Summer Zeit (time), and someone forgot it’s winter now?
The unit is from June 2023. So ESS converters.

Hello Kai, happy new year to you.
There were always ambiguities and confusion because products were not named correctly.
That's why I prefer products with “ADI-2” in the model name to be named correctly.
If that's enough for you, then that's up to you, I don't want to interfere.
My personal preference (maybe after that many postings on the forum) is to ask again to be on the safe side ;-)
While we are at it. It's also a good idea to put a brief description of the setup into the forum signature like OS, CPU, Mainboard and RME converter or recording interface. It is limited to 100 chars anyway, sufficient for most important information and short enough so that it is not disturbing.
