Topic: ADI-2 FS intermittently doesn’t function at QS 48

Hi,

I’ve noticed that sometimes my ADI-2 FS will, for lack of a better explanation, “glitch out” when set to QS 48 (192kHz) and cause the connected devices to not be able to sync. So far, simply cycling through all the speeds of the ADI-2 FS and coming back all the way around to QS 48 has fixed the issue, but I’m worried something is not right…

Any advice much appreciated!

Re: ADI-2 FS intermittently doesn’t function at QS 48

Could be a usb cable problem. Did you try using a short good quality cable to rule out that option?

Re: ADI-2 FS intermittently doesn’t function at QS 48

Hi and thanks IAmAgainst: Yes, I'm using the USB type B to C cable that came with the UFX III to connect to my Mac Mini.

Re: ADI-2 FS intermittently doesn’t function at QS 48

So after reading the manual of my new UFX III again, I see that the fix for this is likely the "Single Speed" setting for World Clock I/O in the Fireface USB Settings application. It seems to have solved the problem.

That said, I don't understand why there is the option there and when you would NOT want to have single speed checked, and the associated advantages and disadvantages.

You don't mention the devices connected and how and if WC is used, so it is a guessing game why this helped.

ADI-2 FS has no USB interface.

I don't get it. The topic is about ADI-2 FS. What UFX III has to do with this?

Re: ADI-2 FS intermittently doesn’t function at QS 48

Please a diagram about your setup and double-check the model names of the devices, thanks.

Then please add marker in the diagram which device is configured as clock master (clock source = "internal").

Regarding clock synchronization, see my blog:
https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ent … ios-en-de/

If an UFX III is involved in this setup, then posting a screenshot of driver settings would be helpful.

I know the next question, "how to post pictures on RME forum"... look here in my blog:

Right: ADI-2 FS is master clock (set to COAX) connected via AES in and out to UFX III (slave, WC set to AES), UFX III is connected to Focusrite Clarett Octopre via ADAT ins and outs (slave, set to W/Clock connected via BNC to UFX III, IN is terminated 75 ohm).

With the above setup the ADI-2 FS sometimes syncs and sometimes doesn’t, unless it seems Single Speed is selected in UFX III device settings.

Hope this is more clear.

The UFX III is connected to the ADI-2 FS, as well as a Focusrite Clarett Octopre (described above in this thread in more detail).

Many thanks for this thorough suggestion, I am on iOS device at the moment and will have to design this diagram on MacOS device asap and post. Probably not until tomorrow here in Nashville central US.

Was it too hard to include this text in the original post?

Now, you say:

ADI-2 FS is master clock (set to COAX)

This is impossible. When set to COAX, the ADI-2 FS is a clock slave and syncs to the coaxial input's clock.

connected via AES in and out to UFX III

But there is no AES I/O on the ADI-2 FS. Do you mean SPDIF coax?

The rest of your setup, as I understand it, should work as configured, provided the ADI-2 FS is set to master. BTW, no need to connect your devices with a dedicated WC cable since they are all connected digitally in both directions. Just set them to corresponding clock sources.

No, the omission was my mistake as I had posted related posts in the "USB" section of forum for the UFX III where I included this information (Topic: ADI-2 FS losing sync intermittently when connected to UFX III).

Indeed, this has been a fundamental misunderstanding on my part of how the "CLOCK" button works to cycle through all of the clock master/slave settings on the ADI-2 FS: only when you cycle to the active LED in the top right corner of LEDs (the light above "48") does it put the ADI-2 FS into Slave mode. I did not understand this before now.

Indeed, the ADI-2 FS is fully compatible with, and sends and receives, AES data via its SPDIF connectors.

Indeed, everything does seem to work now as expected, and now that I know how to properly set the ADI-2 FS to slave mode, I can use the UFX III as master and the ADI and Clarett Octopre as slaves to it which is what I wanted originally. It was my user error.

Great to hear you have sorted this out smile
