Topic: Update gone wrong

Hi to all and Happy Holydays!

After updating my ADI-2DAC fs to the latest firmware update on my old Mac Mini (10.11.6) the device seems to be bricked!
The updates were completed just fine until this last one from this computer.
I can not interact with it except with the power button turning red or white after long press. Also the computer can not see the DAC.
I suspect that after the update I turned it off to activate it but maybe I turned it on again too fast.
Unfortunately I used Dark mode before the update and forgot to turn the screen on before flashing (if this has anything to do)!

Is there anything I can do or should I bring it to the dealer?
I am located in Greece!

Thanks in advance!!

Have you tried to do a factory reset?

Disconnect the ADI-2 DAC from your computer and do the following (from the manual chapter 7. Firmware Update):

"Returning to Factory State

In case a total reset is desired: hold encoder 1 and the VOL button pushed while turning on the
unit. This will reset all current settings to factory default. User-stored Setups and EQ presets are
not affected. The same action is performed by loading Factory via Setup Select. Note that the
reset will be incomplete when the unit is connected to USB while performing the reset.
When holding encoder 1, 2 and the VOL button pushed while turning on the unit, user-stored
Setups and EQ Presets are also reset.
The startup screen shows Reset Done when the reset process has been successfully initiated."

unfortunately i had to leave home and turned off the computer
i will check back probably tomorrow but after the update and the appearance of the problem the computer can not see the DAC
Also the update app fails to start because there is no DAC detected.
I tried on a windows computer too but no luck.

I'm sorry that did not work out, but just to be sure: You did push the VOL button and not the Volume encoder? It's an easy mistake to make and I've done it myself. The VOL button is the top button of the four vertical square buttons on the left side of the display. Encoder 1 is the top right "button".

If you happen to have another 12V power supply you could try that as well in case that one is bad (it happens), but I don't recall the power pins layout and a quick search in the manual did not reveal that. Blame my search skill and not the manual, though.

Check if the PSU plug is all-in and locked (quarter-turn to lock).
No silver part of the plug may be visible.

PSU’s center pin is positive, as denoted on the back of ADI-2.

Be 100 % sure the voltage is no higher than 16 V DC (not AC), 1 Ampere minimum capability (12 Watt), and the polarity is right.
Then double-check.

Wrong PSU -> fried ADI-2 and costly repair.

It’s VERY unlikely that there’s a coincidence of ADI-2 bricked by firmware update AND PSU broken.

BTW: ADI-2 has a fallback mechanism in case firmware update goes wrong.
If you can make ADI-2 being recognized by you computer, re-flash.

yes i agree that it is a very unlikely coincidence to be a fail of the PS.
now I am away from home.. I will try tomorrow

Re: Update gone wrong

Merry Christmas to all!
Still didnt have the chance to go back home to deal with the problem!
If I will not be able to do anything what is the next step repairing the unit?
It should go back to RME in Germany or to the local dealer?

Thanks again for your time!
(It's so strange -if not sad- to lose something given in life -and not only in audio- that it's always there doing it's job flawlessly... you appreciate it even more when you dont have it)

Re: Update gone wrong

I tried again with no results!
I contacted the support of RME and waiting their response!

Re: Update gone wrong

Hi to all..
Any idea about how long may take for RME support to reply?
I understand that these days may take a bit longer but I would like to have their advice before going to the local dealer.

Thank you!

Re: Update gone wrong

It's Christmas time and New Year. Many people are going on vacation. Give it some time.

What hasn't been asked yet:

  • Can you access the device with the ADI-2 remote app?

  • Have you tried every USB port or a different USB cable?

  • What does it look like when you connect the device to another computer?

  • Do you see USB transport errors (CRC errors) in the MADIface driver?

Yes totally understand that these days people go on vacation.. i will for sure wait!

1) no I can not.. the remote does not start because i suppose does not see any RME device connected to the computer. I must admit though that my computers are quite old .. if this has anything to do!
May be should i reinstall the rme remote?
2) different cables yes.. every USB no.. I will do it.
3) the driver (reinstalled) does not start because it does not see any device.. is there MADIface driver for Mac too?

Re: Update gone wrong

> is there MADIface driver for Mac too?

Just see no, there is no driver required.
But it could be the case, that the device needs to be put into CC mode.
Without display not possible.
Does a friend have a Windows PC for a last attempt to install MADIface driver there and to check whether you see device in device manager and that you can perhaps do something with ADI-2 Remote Software under Windows?

Above is for "trial and error" ... last attempts to get something going.
But I have a certain feeling that the device needs service.
Check with RME Support.

Re: Update gone wrong

ADI-2 remote gives this message on my Win laptop:

“Returned 887A0005 at 207”

I tried all the USB ports with 3 different cables and reinstalled the remote and the driver too.

Maybe a graphic issue:

Thanks for replying!
The issue is not about the ADI Remote. I
The DAC itself does not boot up.
My main use for the unit is connected to an RPi running Linux for audio playback.
I just connected it to my Mac Mini (MacOS 10.11.6) to do the update.
The Mac Mini is old but never had issues before updating the DAC software.
I tried doing the update with a Windows 10 laptop too after installing the driver but no luck.

In order to trial and error things I downloaded the remote to my ipad too (to see if it might get seen) but the DAC is not recognized.

As I described on my first post and on the support mail i sent the only thing that happens is the power button of the device to go from Red to White. Nothing else.

Re: Update gone wrong

If this is a hardware issue of the ADI, please contact the retailer or local distributor for service options. Have you tried another power supply?

Yes may be it is a hardware issue but if it is it happened while rebooting after the software update which is a bit strange!
No I have not tried another PS but checked it with multimeter and it gives normal Voltage!
In Greece your Local distributor is www.nakas.gr Yes?
Thanks again!

Re: Update gone wrong

Not sure what happened here, to be honest. How does the unit behave when not connected to the PC? If possible, test another PSU before sending it in.

Exactly the same as I described above..
The power button only changing color and nothing else. No relays clicking, nothing!
I will go to the distributors downtown shop and ask them to plug the unit to their demo ADI-2 DAC fs (assuming they have one) PS.

Re: Update gone wrong

RME Support wrote:

I remembered having another PS (linear) in house and tested  ... exactly the same behavior!!!

Re: Update gone wrong

When I performed the update the device was in Dark Mode. I forgot to turn Dark Mode off before updating.
Might this have created any problem?

Re: Update gone wrong

Update about the issue:
I got the device to the local dealer!
They said that they will check it but the most probable thing that will happen since the device is behaving the way it does is that they will send it to Germany!
The total cost was something I didn’t expect to be so high but there is nothing I can do!!
