Topic: Blue screens on Win XP watching movies from DVD/CD

Hello,

I am having constant BSOD with Fireface UC in Win XP SP3 when I try to watch movies (avi, mpg) located on DVD.

No problems at all if I copy the very same movies on hard disk or put them on iso image on hard disk and use a virtual cd software (Virtual Clone Drive) to make the iso a virtual CD.

The blue screen reason can change from IRQ_NOT_LESS OR EQUAL to something like BUGCODE or others like USBPORT.SYS.

It happens with both Media Player Classics and Winamp.

Both send audio to Analog7+8.

The problem happens while dragging a movie into the player while watching another. System freezes and in a bunch of seconds BSOD shows up.

I never had such problems with a PCI audio interface, and tried with two different CD/DVD players.

The files aren't corrupted, I can copy all of them on hard disk without errors.

It looks like the problem can be alleviated a lot by increasing latency: horrible problems at 128 samples, almost completely usable at 2048 samples; but it is not a solution for me, I can accept glitches but not blue screen; any enhancement about this in latest 0.936 driver?

Drivers 0.9.3.6 still have the problem: in short, when I copy or read files from CD and the Fireface UC is connected a blue screen is almost sure in minutes, no matter the latency.

Please help, it's unbelievable that I have this kind of problems with such a high level device.

With the Fireface UC disconnected or turned off the system is rock solid.

... which doesn't necessarily mean that it could not be the USB driver/chipset itself.  Is the CD drive connected via IDE or via SATA?

two cd writers connected through IDE, motherboard is Abit IP35 Pro XE.

Sure the PCI/IDE is on same IRQ as some USB root (IRQ 16), but cannot change manually the settings.

Of course it could be something in the USB chipset, but the system has gone perfect for more than a year and with several USB devices connected...

Please check the BIOS for AHCI mode on the IDE ports. You should be able to switch between AHCI and legacy/classic/standard modes for these. Try changing the mode and report back. smile

Interesting... i never changed anything there, but I know it's there and currently set to "IDE" in the BIOS; will change it to "AHCI" (consider that main SATA controller is set to "IDE" as well and I would like to avoid setting it to "AHCI", but I can try on IDE ports); will report back in a few hours.

Usually the IDE setting is prefered, but I'm curious how this works out. You wrote that it only happend when you drag a new video file while another one is playing. What happens when you chose to "Open File" and browse for it via drop-down menu instead of drag&drop?

Now IDE is AHCI and hardware manager reports conflict in I/O space for both primary and secondary IDE, don't know what is conflicting with them.
They're marked with yellow mark, but the CD devices work anyway (I see three other secondary and primary IDE with no conflict).

Anyway, this is the simplest recipe I found so far to cause the problem:

1 - Have winamp play an mp3 from USB device, Winamp has fireface as output device
2 - Copy data from DVD to a folder on local hard disk

I can see winamp stopping playback as soon as copy from DVD starts, system response becomes jerky and it's blue screen in less than a minute.
Trying to solve the conflict now, but windows doesn't let me change the i/o ranges manually...

Ok, solved the conflict (removed and reinstalled the PCI IDE, now correctly marked as JMicron, it was generic before).

The problem persists.

Trying to go back to IDE mode for IDE controller now...

You could try to disable one of the IDEs to solve the conflict just for testing purpose. If the BSOD still happen with AHCI then you shouldn't bother too much anyway and set it back to ATA/IDE/Legacy.

Please also try to delete both the IDE controller and the USB controller via device-manager and then reboot to make Windows reinstall them cleanly. You will lose mouse and keyboard controls if those are connected via USB, but you can shut down via the power button.

Deleted all USB, reinstalled on reboot, still BSOD.
Tried changing USB port, still BSOD (I saw from device manager that the USB root changed as well)
I'll now try disabling one IDE.

Updates!

Summary from the start:

- Brought IDE mode to "AHCI" in BIOS
- Removed and reinstalled all IDE stuff and made AHCI driver install without conflicts in Windows
- Deleted all USB controllers so that Windows reinstalled all of them
- Changed USB port for RME, so that it has a USB root dedicated only for it

* until here BSODs still happening

- Set IRQ PCI allocation to "manual" instead of "auto" in BIOS, but not tweaked any IRQ setting
- Brought back IDE controller to "IDE" mode in BIOS

* System smooth as silk, copy from DVDs is much faster even with no RME

- Brought IRQ PCI allocation back to "auto" in BIOS
- Moved RME to USB port to which it was previously connected

* System now working flawlessly

I think a mix of the above - probably the reinstall of IDE and USB the most important, produced a benign voodoo - or maybe a IRQ shake caused by the "manual"-"auto" throttle.

Anyway, so far, so good, even after reboot!
