Topic: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

I've written about this before and here I am again.

2008 MacBook Pro, FireFace UC, SNow Leopard, Logic Pro. All I have to do is use the bounce function in Logic and I get one of two results.

1. I get through the bounce but Logic looses communication with the FF. I have to un plug/ re plug the USB cable to get it to work again.

OR

2. I get a complete kernel panic and have to restart. Even then if I don't unplug/ replug the USB after restart, communication is patchy and when I launch TotalMix I get random peak and meter lights flashing. WHat follows is the Apple crash report. If anyone can make sense of it I would very much appreciate it.

Re: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

I am having similar problems, which I posted here:
http://www.rme-audio.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7804

I recently got a FFUC, which is giving me similar problems. Here's a list along with their frequency:

1. Kernel Panics require force shutdown of computer (occasionally).
2. Stops outputting audio & will not allow connection via Audio/MIDI (occasionally).
3. Distorted audio (occasionally).
4. Kills 2nd USB port (frequently).
5. Audio stops when CD is inserted into optical drive (always).
6. Apple Remote stops working (once).

I have an Early 2008 MacBook Pro 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8

I have had to stop using the FFUC & go back to my Multiface I & expresscard because the FFUC is too unstable for any use. I am still waiting for tech support to respond to my last emails.

In that list you'll see that I am also having the optical drive problem which you posted about here:
http://www.rme-audio.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6978
"Every time there was any DVD drive activity the computer lost connection with the interface. "

And which I posted about here:

Re: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

Paul, you are still using driver 1.19? Why that? Please try version 1.21 or even better 1.30.

Re: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

Matthias, my original post was back in early February. 1.21 was not released until the middle of March.

I noticed the new 1.3/ 1.02 set but there were some guys with early report issues so I stepped back but now with the latest one's I will try them. If anything is different I'll let you know.

KLind regards

Re: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

Wow! It's fixed for me.

The 1.3/ 1.02 package has done the trick - well almost. I can bounce in Logic and not loose communication with the FFUC.

The "almost" part refers to if say I have iTunes playing in the background and in Logic I select the Bounce command. The CD drives makes a noise for a second and playing audio stops - but then it resumes. You can do the same thing by having iTunes playing and open Disk Utility since it spins the CD drive for a second just like selecting Bounce in Logic does - but this is a big improvement.

Thanks.

Re: Repeatable FireFace UC Crash

I have figured out what was disabling the the 2nd USB port on my MacBook Pro: it is actually the 2 USB ports on the Apple 24" aluminum Cinema Display that become disabled, & not the second port on the computer.

I also have a workaround to the problem of the FFUC becoming disabled whenever I insert a CD/DVD into the optical drive: simply de-select the FFUC in Audio/MIDI in OS X, insert the disc, then re-enable the FFUC.
