Topic: Total Mix Unstable With 2 Firefaces

Technicals:
PC Windows XP, Cubase-5, RME FF800 (firmware 2.77) & FF400 (firmware 1.7)  (driver 2.6.3.1)
Intention:
To use FF400 as stand alone unit in conjunction with FF800.
Method:
Connected FF400 to FF800 Adat1 via toslink cables. FF400 connected to PC via firewire400 cable. Turned on FF400.
Settings - clock mode = AutoSync, Preferred sync = Adat1 In. Stored in flash memory
Mixer Matrix - Analog in1 - Adat1, Analog in2 - Adat2 (etc x 8). Adat in11 - Analog1, Adat in12 - Analog2 (etc x 8). Then flashed current mixer state, turned off unit and disconnected firewire cable.
Turned on FF800 (connected to computer via firewire400 cable) and turned on FF400.
With multi-track project loaded in Cubase5, all audio routings appeared to work fine.
Problem:
TotalMix crashed after brief use. This required reboot of system to restore the mixer. Tried again and again, but same thing occurred each time.  It seems no one particular action caused it to crash. The sorts of things I was doing included - editing track names, storing presets, moving the display panel, routing, setting levels.... One specific occasion it crashed after re-sizing the mixer display - it went into busy mode. Further attempts to re-size just created white voids. Only one solution - force quit through task manager and reboot because the mixer icon had vanished.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Please re-check the driver version. Current one is 2.9992.

Re: Total Mix Unstable With 2 Firefaces

Very Strange.
I downloaded the latest driver and installed it.
I brought up the cubase project and opened TotalMix.
The skin looked a bit different. First I tried to move TotalMix.
It was very very stubborn. After a delay it inched to a new position.
I then pressed play on the project, but it refused to activate. Cubase was frozen.
I got this error - "Runtime error, R6025, pure virtual function..."
I quitted and rebooted, this time turning off the FF400, leaving the FF800 on.
The symptoms were the same.
I then shut down and reloaded the previous driver (2.6.3.1)
Cubase responded as normal, in other words, it functioned without error.
However, the TotalMix problem was still there. When I moved it several times and re-sized it the whole thing froze up again.
Back to where I was.

What should I do?

Check the computer and the FireWire cable. Something is wrong with that machine.

Re: Total Mix Unstable With 2 Firefaces

Computer seems fine. It has no conflict with other programs. It is not connected to the internet, and I have the internal audio card disabled.
I substituted 2 different firewire cables, and this produced no change.
However, since the problem also remains after removing the second fireface from the chain, the issue may well be to do with upgrading the FF800.
(Fact is I chained the two firefaces at the same time as upgrading driver and firmware on both)

Conclusion:
Having 2 firefaces chained is probably coincident to rather than the cause of my problem.

This therefore leads this discussion to a slightly different thread, which I will take up under a new topic.

Thanks for your help so far.
