Topic: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

Hi,

My local music store has an RME Fireface 800 on sale.
It has been in the store on demo for ages and I only recently read a review on how good they are.
I would like to buy it but I am concerned that it is an old model and will not be able to be updated by downloading the latest FF800 firmware.
Can anybody tell me if there has been a hardware upgrade to the original FF800?
Also, how can I check how old the FF800 for sale is please? ( Is there a way of figuring this out using the serial number or something?)

Thank you

eLeV8

Re: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

Hi Daniel,

The retailer is reluctant to give me the serial numnber over the phone. Im not sure why..Maybe somethng to do with insurance scams?
Anyway..
What I really want to know is;
1) Did RME make more than one hardware version of the FF 800 please?

If only one hardware model was made then I will buy the demo FF 800 and update the firmware over the net when I get home. Will this work please?

Thanks for your time Daniel,

More than obviously we made more than one hardware version of the FF800. How else could there be differences? HeadScratch

Elev8 is a (potential) new user who is not familiar with Fireface versions or revisions.  His question doesn't say anything about a new or old hardware version; he was only asking if it could be updated to the latest firmware.

I'm not sure I've read anything here that would lead me to believe there are various hardware versions that have been produced, and therefore differences.  If so, are they labeled as such?  Is there an "A" or "B" in the serial number?

I think his question is a legitimate one.

Ira

PS  Welcome back.  You were gone a few days.  Holiday, or not feeling good?

Re: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

We have a repeated discussion here about Firefaces that need a hardware mod to be able to work with the latest firmware without clicks. As stated there are models before and after those (and not labeled). I thought he was referring to this, but you are right, reading again it seems he is just worried if the flash update will work at all. Well, it will work even with the oldest Fireface 800.

Re: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

Hello again,

Thank you for your replies and I am sorry if my questions are irritating.
Forgive me for my ignorance but I am still not clear about the various models of FF 800 that were made.
It is clear from your replies that I will be able to update the firmware on even the oldest FF 800. Does this mean that it will operate exactly the same as a recent release FF 800?
OR
Do I need to get the hardware mod done as well so that I wont get clicks and pops?

I look forward to your help and I must say I am incredibly excited about the purchase of this little one rack box...... It should have been called the Tardis because it is certainly bigger on the inside than on the outside. A huge mixer.... A magnificent patchbay all balanced and no bantam cable crackles... 4 top end Pre amps...awesome conversion.... the best clock. I want one.

I just want to make sure I am buying a good one with drivers and firmware that will work with my Mac Pro Intel/ Snow Leopard.

Thanks Folks

Re: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

I believe you need to supply the serial number to Mathias in order for him to answer your question.  I would press the vendor for the serial number or look somewhere else to a vendor that can provide you with this information. To my way of thinking, there is no reason a vendor can not supply you with this number unless they are trying to hide something. Otherwise, how are you supposed to know how old the unit is that you are buying? HeadScratch  All the more reason to look elsewhere to my way of thinking.  Mathias should be able to confirm this. Just my 2 cents worth!  Good luck.

Re: Fireface 800 Firmware version?

Hello again and thank you for your suggestion to press the retailer.
I phoned him and politely stated the situation and he has given me the serial number.
Should I post the serial number on this site or should I send an email with the number directly to RME.

Thanks again,

EleV8

Go to one of Mathias' posts and click on the "Email" link under his picture.  You'll be able to send him a private message, and hopefully you'll get an answer.  You can also look for posts from "RME Support", and send an email. Daniel could also help.
