Topic: Multiface will now only work with power connected host error otherwise

Hi All,
Anyone have any idea is going on here? Walked into the studio today and now the only way I can get my multiface to operate is to plug it in. Is the unit on it's way out?

Hi All,
Sorry about this very vague post. My Multiface has worked under PCI card power for 9 years. Yesterday this new behavior started. When my Multiface is powered by the PCI card only, it displays an host error and the DSP driver displays a connection error. When I power the Multiface with an external power supply, it works and connects correctly. My Multiface is very old, I'm wondering if it is failing and should be replaced or if I just power it with an external power supply from now on everything will continue to work reliably. Is this a known issue of any kind?

Hi Brandon,

It's hard to say if the problem is in the card or the Multiface, unless you test the box with a known good PCI card. In the US, you can get in touch with Synthax to test your hardware (Multiface and HDSP PCI) and repair if possible. My email address is in the link to the left.

What is the latest policy on the "Repairability" of the PCI HDSP cards?  I was told that RME and Synthax no longer repair the PCI HDSP cards - and instead offer you a "Replacement Card" for $250 with the return of your malfunctioning card.

Has this changed since I inquired about service earlier this year?  I still have a failed HDSP PCI card I'd like to get fixed, but a $250 "repair" (replacement) is too high considering you can buy a whole MF1/PCI setup on ebay for $400 or less.

The factory has declined to service these HDSP PCI cards, when we send them for repair we get back a new card and a bill for full price of the card. Nothing else can be done, sorry. The Multiface can be repaired in the US, though.

Whether or not a card will be repaired depends on each individual unit. If a repair is economically feasible, it will be carried out. Sometimes, the time required to track down and repair a problem would likely cost almost as much as or more than the factory price for a new card, in which case we offer an exchange for a new one, which is also beneficial for the customer IMHO...
