Topic: Spdif Not Working?

Hello, I am a long time FF800 user. I use a Presonus Central Station in my setup and cannot get spdif digital audio out from the FF800 into the CS. I can't even get the the FF's spdif lights in the front to come on. I've tried every possible spdif combo in the control panel software. What could I be doing wrong? Perhaps the FF not working correctly? I don't think it's the later as everything else works perfectly. Thanks, J

Re: Spdif Not Working?

I think the FF800's SPDIF "light" only indicates if its SPDIF Input is sync'd/locked.  Since you are using the FF's SPDIF OUTPUTS, the front light won't light up wink

Are you using COAX or Optical to your Presonus?  Make sure the FF is configured to send SPDIF down the correct path (the Optical Outs would generally be in ADAT format - you might need to select "SPDIF > OPTICAL 1" or similar in the FF Control Panel if using Optical).  Also make sure Totalmix is sending a signal to the correct outputs.

Have you selected the correct SPDIF input (Coax or Optical)on the Presonus?

Re: Spdif Not Working?

Don't stare directly into it, but look on the back panel and see if you can see the red laser light at the output.  You need to disconnect your S/PDIF cable and push the little cover flap in if you have the model with connector covers.  You should see the laser if the unit is powered up, I believe.  If you don't see the red light, your S/PDIF circuitry is probably gone.  Just one simple thing to try. It could still be bad if you do see the laser, but if not, could be a problem.  The RME folks can probably confirm that this is a valid check.

Re: Spdif Not Working?

That would be applicable if the OP is using Toslnk SPDIF.  We don't know if the OP is using COAX or Optical ATM...

You can also do a physical "Loopback" Optical test and test the ADAT Optical I/O that way (or SPDIF Optical if set correctly in the FF's settings panel).  The same "Loopback" test can be used for the COAX I/O as well.

Re: Spdif Not Working?

Good point Randyman.  I was mistakenly thinking of the ADAT outputs.  Some of my other equipment has Toslink connectors for the SP/DIF I/O and I got them confused.  Sorry about that.

Re: Spdif Not Working?

Thank you for the replies. Had to step out for a bit. Yes I was trying to use coax. I haven't looked yet but if I can use the Adat outs for stereo I will give that a try as the CS has a Tos Link input as well. If that doesn't work then I will learn how to do the loopback tests that were suggested. Thanks again for all the replies. J

Re: Spdif Not Working?

Well I got it working. Got it working with the coax. spdif.  Don't know what I did different but I'll take it.......  But now that I have it working I don't know that I like it! Really brightened everything up. But perhaps a good thing as I've been feeling as though some of my mixes are ending up being overly bright and even a bit brittle. I absolutely do not blame the FF for this however.

Might anybody here have any opinions as to the wisdom of going in digitally to a Central Station or other similar device? Or maybe better yet should I bypass the CS all together. I do like having a physical knob and being able to a/b different monitors with a push of a button though. Thanks for all the replys. J
