Topic: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

Hi.

I have 8 microphones, going into 8 pre-amps, going into my FF400.
I need to have the FF400 handle all 8 signals the same way.
How do I get the 8 signals at the same level inside Logic?

Thanks, Andrea

More details, please. What kind of preamp is this, how is it connected to the FF?

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

I have an Audient ASP008, the 8 analog outs are going into the FF400 (inputs 1-8).

How should I set it so that inputs 1-2 have the same gain as inputs 3-8?

thank you, Andrea

PS: the 'adat in' would solve it, of course, but I'm already using the 'adat in' for other inputs. Amazing FF400 :-)

The inputs 1/2 can be used with XLR or TRS. With XLR you have +10 dBu as max input level, which will most probably be too sensitive for you. Then use TRS for +21 dBu. That nearly matches the other inputs when set up accordingly.

Note that older FF 400 have +10 dBu at the TRS as well. That changed around the time the UC became available.

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

Thanks for your reply.
But I'm still confused...

I'm using 8 TRS jacks to go in the FF400.
I bought it new about 6 weeks ago... is it the new model??

You're saying "That nearly matches the other inputs when set up accordingly".
What is "accordingly"?
If I leave the 1-2 preamp at 0db (assuming this is a line input) the signal is weaker compared to the other channels.
Unlike the manual that says:"(1-2) TRS inputs are true full level Line inputs"

I set 3-4 at 0bd with no 'pad' and no 'inst'.
They seem to be as sensitive as 5-8 set at +4dBu (as stated on the manual).
So I have 6 good channels which behaves the same way, I think.

thank you for your support on this.

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

1-2 @ 0 dB = +21 dBu
3-4 @ 0 dB = +13 dBu
5-8 @ +4 dBu = +13 dBu

It's all in the manual. Page 51 tells you that you have to enable PAD and set the gain to +6 to reach the same setting as 'Lo Gain' of channels 5-8, which results in +19 dBu for all inputs. That should be near enough to the +21 of inputs 1 and 2.

Or you set input 1-2 to +10 dB gain, getting +11 dBu, which is near your current setting, but might be too sensitive for the Audient's high output level.

Learn something new every day!!  Perhaps this will be reflected in V1.7 of the FF400 manual?

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

The information had been updated in the 1.7 manual, see my quote. In case you meant it the other way round: Older units shipped with the correct manual/specs at that time. If I include all the old infos in the latest manuals then these manuals will certainly become unreadable.

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

The FF400 manual on the website still appears to stand at V1.6 dating from 2008.  Current specs do not even mention TRS in Ch 1, 2 (at least directly).

I believe that if you have a product in the field with the same designation but two different configurations and no apparent external difference, then it is important to acknowledge this in any updated manual.  It is not as if the FF400 is an obsolete and discarded product.  If someone buys a secondhand FF400, downloads the "V1.7" manual (when available) and reads that they should be able to put +21dBu into 1 and 2, then they will be disappointed.

I think your customers (at least this one) would expect some documentation of the fact that there are two versions of the FF400 out there with a different specification, and some way of finding out (serial number range?) which is which.

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

The FF 400 manual has ben updated to 1.7 and printed since december 2009, and has been included in the new units where the specs match the manual. So that customer (who bought the unit 6 weeks ago) must have a valid and current manual. But the one on the website ist still the old one...don't know why, will change that in a minute.

Re: All inputs at the same volume? FF400

Matthias, it would also be useful to have the version nr. - v1.6, v1.7 etc. - explicitly displayed in the body text of the pdf manual...or at least in the pdf metadata. Of course it can be indirectly deduced from the pdf modification date, but why make us work harder  smile.

Kind regards

Found it:
The version number is written in chapter "8. Appendix" of the "General" part of the handbook.
In version 1.5 this is page 10.

There is a line reading: "Copyright MC, date. Version #".
