Topic: Latest drivers, improved sound?

Hi everyone!

I've been a RME user for the past couple of years but this is the first time I have ventured into these forums so a bit Hi to everyone!

Ok, I've got a question about drivers.

I googled drivers improving the sound of audio interfaces but couldn't find anything.
I also searched on the forums here as well but also couldn't find anything which brings Me to My question.

Do updated drivers improve the sound of an audio device?

I've just changed over to windows 7 X64 and when I updated the drivers for My FF800 I could swear the sound is better some how!

Am I imagining things or has the sound actually improved with the drivers?
If it is My imagination I don't know why as it was the last thing I expected to change.

Martinez.

Re: Latest drivers, improved sound?

The driver shouldn't affect the sound of the interface, unless the previous driver you were using had issues that degraded the sound (i.e, it caused distortion, glitches, etc). Being that RME is a company known for making fairly good drivers, I've never experienced any driver related improvement in sound fidelity using their units. I have however experienced improved performance and stability with different iterations of drivers that in turn improved smoother playback -- For example when they were correcting Snow Leopard issues.

I don't represent RME, however. So, really the only definitive answer would be theirs.

Re: Latest drivers, improved sound?

Glad you're enjoying the sound of your gear!  But I fear you're kidding yourself about any improvement :-)

What CAN make a difference is twiddling all your audio connections if they've been undisturbed for a long time.  Expensive cables, gold-plated connectors etc. are pointless.  But keeping ordinary ones clean is a very good idea.
