Topic: RME and Display Port. Current state of UFX performance.

Does RME have any plans to produce an audio interface using the Display Port - tipped to replace firewire as the new medium for data transfer?

On this subject we used a Fireface 800 for five years or so in another studio and now we upgrading our equipment and looking at purchasing a UFX unit. Does anybody have actual performance figures including latency for various systems? We would need to know what studios are actually achieving. The RME advertising says it is "...an interface designed for users who don't want to make compromises in sound, stability and ultra-low latency operation". But how stable? And how low latency? We were for example using the FF800 with a Toshiba laptop running @ 64 samples for 8 track recording, and 128 samples for anything more intense (VST's etc.). Does the UFX acive these sample rates reliably over USB and if so would the UFX run sixteen tracks with an octamic via USB?

We provide some online reviews on the UFX product website with test results (e. g.: AudioFanzine review).

Display Port? I haven't heard anything about that used for data transfer. Can you point to some references please.

Or did you mean Lightpeak, the Intel connection that is much talked about in forums across the glob but not yet seen in action.

As I understand it the Dsiplay port has the ability to vary the amount allocated to audio. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_port. My question is whether RMe has plans to utilise this port.

Display Port is kind of Mini-DVI Connector.
Those connectors are made to transport audio (like HDMI) mixes, so stereo or maybe Surround via AC3.
But it is not intended for multichannel sound.
The thinking behind is: when you connect to a Plasma screen or external screen that has speakers built in you don't have to use separate cables for the audio transport.
