sorry, but i don't quite understand what you said because there is no icon on the desktop which i would drag to the trash bin to "eject" as i would for example safely remove my hard disk...

I know there can be a hardware issue with hot-plugging Firewire gear.  But what harm could come from merely powering down?  I thought "safely remove" was just about making sure buffered data was safely stored.  Is the relevant to an audio device?

Yes, and to avoid BSODs under Windows. Not always, but sometimes. There can be several processes running which usually prevent the unit from being removed as long as these are not shut down.

Re: shutdown

Hi,

You can unload/make inactive, in FF Settings and TotalMix dialogs from the Dock
by right clicking on the icons but there isn't Safely remove
like in Windows 7, maybe there are but I haven't found it on OSX !?

So unload FF icons from Dock and turn down any amps and/or speakers before
and then turn off Fireface, works fine here on my MBP (early 2008)

Re: shutdown

On a PC, I've personally always switched the FF800 off and on without safely removing it, and never had problems. YMMV, though, depending o the system. As for the Mac, it won't do physical harm, so just try it. If nothing untoward happens, then it seems to be ok.

Re: shutdown

I switch the FF on and off without safe removing (win XP) and never had any problems related to this topic.

Re: shutdown

We just had a user in this forum who had BSODs until he started to do it the 'right' way. My shitty Dell also can BSOD if I fool around too much without doing the Safely Remove dance. Point is that audio interfaces are no memory sticks. They have lots of drivers, software and connections to the system open while you try to remove the hardware where all this relies on. Seen it like that it's a wonder it doesn't BSOD every time for every user when they just turn it off.

That said since I started using this tool

http://www.safelyremove.com/

I use the safely remove function more often than before. USBSR improves Windows' own feature in many ways and makes it a joy to work with.

so, do you think I need something like this on my Mac also or can I just turn of the fireface mixer and fireface settings to avoid getting something broken?

Re: shutdown

I am not aware of a similar tool for Macs. Shutting down everything that has to do with audio should be enough. Closing settings and mixer will make sure the last state is stored and not corrupted, although I did not hear that this has been a problem for someone.
