Topic: RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652 What do i need with this ?

Sorry I am new to this and are looking at RME.  In the past i have been using Pro-tools with 002  and Aurora  and want to upgrade and have more channels, I have  a range of Great Pre-Amps from API - Presonus, And want to know if  can i just use the light pipe inputs on the HDSP 9652 with some of my preamps and get the great RME converter sound on my recordings?    is this all i need or do i need something else?

I am so sorry my ignorance in this area,  i am just use to plugging in a firewire cable with the 002 or the Lynx aurora.....  and not so use to using pci cards.

some understanding on this would be much appreciated

thanks for your time ...

Unless the preamps hav inbuilt AD conversion of some kind, you will need an external AD converter. The card's optical inputs are digital only.

Which preamp are you using exactly and how many channels are required?

That is perfect thanks that answers my question .....   so is there any RME PCI cards that have AD/DA converters built in ?  we  looking for  approx. 16

channels in / 8 out .....  or am i looking at the FireFace range  to do that ?

Thanks again for your time  just wanted to see if there was another solution....

The API's i have don't have converters.... The DBX and PRESONUS do  but i am not happy with the quality.
