Topic: Non-technical guy with RME babyface. I just want to sing, help me guys

Hi Guys,

I want to know how to get started using my new RME Babyface.

I want to record the sound in audacity while hearing the music and my voice while singing.
I looked into the totalmix manual and there are many things I can't understand. I know, it's just me.

Here is the steps I did to set up babyface:
1.) After I installed all the drivers and reboot (My OS is Win 7 + 64 bit).
2.) Hook up Condenser Mic to "Line IN L", AN1(hardware inputs) goes up and down as I sing.
3.) Headphone is connected in the side of the device(not in the breakout cable)

Started up audacity.
Change preferences there to
Playback: Analog(3+4) RME Babyface
Recording: Analog(1+2) RME Babyface

I can record my voice. Playback is also ok there in audacity.
My problem is I can't hear my voice while singing.
Anyone knows how to set it up so I can hear both voice and music in the headphone.
I have been trying to figure out since last night with no luck.
Appreciate all the help guys.

At the bottom of the fader in Totalmix under hardware inputs that you can see the levels on (AN1 in your case), it shows the output that its going to. You need to click that and select a different input (your headphone input).

It took me a little while to figure this out as well.

Your headphone output (Analog 3/4) needs the signal from your Mic connected to the analog input 1. This means you have to create your headphone mix.

This is very easy with one channel:
Click the output channel 3/4 (it gets brighter) and move the fader of your input channel 1 from all the way down up to 0 dB. Now the heaphone out (3/4) gets the signal from the input channel (= hardware monitoring through TotalMix).

If you want some reverb on your voice for a more natural feeling in the headphones, turn on the reverb, select a preset and move the send fader in analog input 1 and the return fader in output 3/4 up. Keep in mind, the reverb is not recorded, it just works for the time you are singing into the mic.

Thank you so so so much Breathless and Knut. It worked. Yahooooooooo.
You made me so happy today. Now I can sing the whole weekend. smile smile smile

Another question though.
How can I apply the reverb to be recorded as I hear it?
I like to apply effects and hear those output and record what I hear on the headphones.

Recording a submix via Loopback is described in the Babyface manual on page 59.
