Topic: Problem with Neutrik Firewire Chassis Connector

Hello,

First please forgive my bad english.

I decided to rack my FF800 and wire most of the connections on a rear rack panel. I mounted a Neutrik Firewire Chassis Connector http://www.neutrik.com/fl/en/dataconnec … etail.aspx  and plugged my FF800 from my PC through this Neutrik connector with two firewire cables but now I get many dropouts when I play audio.

I tried different firewire câbles, I tried to detach the Neutrik connector from the panel (I thought it was a ground problem), but it didn't fix anything.

Do you think this Neutrik connector is faulty or what I want to do is impossible ?

Thanks

Maybe your cables are too long. I believe 5 metres is the longest allowed cable length in the specification. I have no problems what so ever with my Neutrik chassis mounted USB and FW connectors. They are 0,5m (in the rack) and at most 3m long (to the computer). Remember to hang the cables properly so they don't strain and make fault contact. Then again, I've had three FW 6 to 4 pin adapters not work at all... Could be a faulty chassis connector. Do the cables work when they are connected directly between the FF800 and the computer?

Re: Problem with Neutrik Firewire Chassis Connector

Hi Mats,

Thanks for your answer.

I tested first with a 0,5m cable (in the rack) and a 1,2m cable (to the computer) and then with two 1,2m cables. Each 1,2m cable works fine when connected directly between FF800 and PC.
I paid attention to the good hanging of the cables.

Maybe the chassis connector is faulty. I'll try another one.

When you mounted your connector, did you mind about optional grounding ?

Well. I have the chassis connectors mounted on a Thon Rack plate http://www.thomann.de/de/thon_rackblende_32_dformat.htm , which is also connected to my preamps, the UFX and some other stuff. So they share a common ground. Dunno about the connector in your case. If possible try a new one from the same supplier. I hope you're buying from a local dealer...

Re: Problem with Neutrik Firewire Chassis Connector

Almost the same configuration as yours...

The Neutrik Firewire Chassis Connector features a tiny removable metal tab wich allows or prevents firewire grounding. I unsuccessfully tried both. Did you let this metal tab or break it off ?
I'm also wondering if I'd better to connect the rack plate to the ground, as the Neutrik connector sockets aren't grounded.

I'll try a new connector. Can't send the old one back to my dealer - the same as yours wink - shipping is more expensive than the connector...
