Topic: Fireface 800: Autosync Bug

This is an absolutely reproducible Autosync bug with Fireface 800

Setup:

COMPUTER #1
Asus Laptop PC
Window 7 64 bit
Nuendo 5.5 64 bit
Babyface: Driver 21.06.11, vr 0.984, HW 184

COMPUTER #2
Mac Pro 1,1
OSX 10.6.8
Fireface 800: 2.93, 2.77 (Dual daisy chained via FW800)

Babyface (PC) connects ADAT (optical out: SPDIF) to master Fireface (mac) ADAT input #2 where "preferred sync" reference is SPDIF, "SPDIF input" is set to ADAT2, and "clock mode" is set to Autosync. Remember there is a second Fireface hanging off the master set to autosync word clock input from master. No other digital audio connections are made to any fireface 800's.

Repro:
1) MAC: Set Fireface master to 44.1 via RME settings app
2) PC: create 44.1 Nuendo session
3) PC: set main output of Nuendo to Babyface AS1/2
4) PC: create a MONO channel
5) PC: insert the Steinberg Test Generation plugin onto the MONO track
6) PC: select WHITE NOISE as source in test gen plugin
-  PC: use digicheck to verify *mono* white noise is sending from Babyface AS1/2
7) MAC: show RME fireface settings
-  Mac: RME "system clock" should read 44.1
-  MAC: digicheck scope to verify *mono* white noise is at master Fireface 800 ADAT input 1/2
8) PC: change Nuendo sample rate from 44.1 to 48k
-  PC: use digicheck to verify *mono* white noise is sending from Babyface AS1/2
-  MAC: RME "system clock" should now read 48k, as well SPDIF in and autosync reference
-  MAC: digicheck to verify *mono* white noise is at master Fireface 800 ADAT input 1/2
9) PC: change Nuendo sample rate from 48k to 88k
-  PC: use digicheck to verify *mono* white noise is sending from Babyface AS1/2
BUG - MAC: RME "system clock" should now read 88k but it currently reads 44.1k, SPDIF in and autosync reference reads 88k
-  MAC: use digicheck to verify *mono* white noise is at master Fireface 800 ADAT input 1/2
BUG - digicheck shows incoming white noise as "stereo" even though mono is sent. Somehow the incoming signal is distorted to  be stereo

Workaround:
10) MAC: manually change mac RME sample rate to 88k using RME settings app
-  MAC: use digicheck scope to verify *mono* white noise is at master Fireface 800 ADAT input 1/2
-  now incoming white noise is "mono"

Autosync in not changing system to proper clock and is not handling incoming SPDIF signal properly!

This issue is completely reproducible. I would love to call tech support if needed or even video tape a demo of the issue. Please respond to this post and I'll call in.

I've had other issues reported here http://www.rme-audio.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=11170 when trying to change sample rates on the mac. Perhaps they are related.

Thanks much!

Re: Fireface 800: Autosync Bug

What you describe here can be simply said in one sentence: AutoSync should follow the input sample rate fully on the SPDIF input. Indeed it should do so. It will not do so on WC or ADAT ins, which is fully intentional. We'll check, thanks.
