Topic: connecting and clocking the octamic 2 too my ufx

Please walk me through slaving/connecting  my octamic 2 too my ufx. Where does the BNC cable hook on the UFX? where should the dip switches be on the Octamic? I want to record at use all 8 channels on the octamic for drums... plus my ufx channels also... Please give me step by step instructions... Also I was wondering  about the optical cables  themselves? Do you remove the little plastic ends before connecting? I want to set this system up for the best sound and recording quality possible I am new to clocking and optical setup... Should I be set to consumer or professional?  on the ufx ASE I have no idea?  I am running a ADK pc i7 windows 7.  should I be running the UFX at 192kh for the best recording quality or does it limit my tracks and is there dithering involved with mixdown? vs 44.1? I want to get the best possible recording quality from both units so all your information on how to achieve that would be awesome and I would be very grateful thank you so much..

Hi Brian,

Starting form the UFX-

UFX Settings Panel-
ADAT 2Out = ADAT
AES IN = AES
AES Out = Pro
Word Clock Single Speed = Unchecked
Clock Source = Internal
Sample rate = Whatever you want to run at.
Do not adjust the Pitch settings

From the back of the UFX-
UFX Word Clock Out to OctamicII Word Clock In
UFX ADAT In to Octamic II ADAT Main Out

You need to remove the little clear plastic covers of the ADAT cables before plugging them into the ADAT ports.

From the Back of the Octamic II

Jumper settings -
Jumper 1, 2 in the down position.
3 switches beween 44/48 or multiples thereof but is not required in slave mode.
4 down for 88/96k operation.
4, 5 down for 176/192k operation.

This will make your Octamic II be the slave to the UFX.
You can work with any sample rates and the OctaMic II will follow the clock settings of the UFX.

If you want to work at 88.2 or 96k then you need 2 more cables.
The 2 extra cables are required to transmit the full 8 channels of audio at the hihgher sample rates.
Plug them in this way.
UFX ADAT IN 2 to Octanic II ADAT AUX Out


On the TotalMix FX and in your software The Octamic II inputs will be channels 15-22.

Hi Brian,
I fixed a couple typos in my post.
You will get excellent results running the Octamic at any sample rate. The problem with 192k is that it uses significantly more system resources. It is far from an industry standard at this point to be using 192k for anything productions. 88.2k and 96k are only just starting to be more commonplace in bigger studios that can afford the storage requirements.
Even though higher samples do sound better with high quality converter like RME the differences are not gigantic and have to be balanced with the costs associated with running at those higher sample rates. In the end someone is gonna be listening to it as an MP3, CD or LP anyways. smile

Hi Brian,
If your studio mostly consists of balanced audio connections then +4.
If it is mostly unbalanced audio connections then -10.
IN general though Balanced +4 is what you want to do.
