Topic: Can high dB signals damage audio interface?
Hello all,
The last few years I've been using more and more soft synths in my projects and, as I'm sure most of you have also experienced, the signal strength of these coming into my DAW are usually very strong. 3 out of 4 patches that I call up push my meters into the red in my DAW but on my UFX the signal is yellow (never seen it actually turn red). I don't think I've ever heard the point of saturation or distortion in my speakers. I don't have this problem with my outboard gear as I can physically set the volume knob based on the average patch volume to avoid clipping. But with virtual instruments the volume disparity is huge between one sound and another. It's also annoying to have to constantly adjust volumes with the mouse whenever I'm searching through the sound banks.
The questions are:
1) Is there a way where I can set up a limiter to automatically buffer signals coming into my UFX or DAW?
2) Could continued abuse of the signal path with overly hot sources cause any damage to my UFX firewire or USB ports?
3) or is there a way to make sure the signal meters on my DAW match those on my DAW (this is particularly helpful when finalizing my mix, as I want to make sure that I am in fact receiving the strongest signals the UFX can receive without clipping).
Thanks
