Topic: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

As I was mentally kicking around the idea of selling off my 3 Orpheus and concentrating instead on 2 UFX-- I wondered if one UFX with 12 channels of micpre (4 built-in; 8 external) could be run via ADAT into another UFX with 12 micpre channels similar to the first? How would clocking be handled if the ADAT clock were not used, but rather with a short length of RG 59? IOW how is master/slave set?

The setup will work. You can choose a clock master device that you prefer... All other devices will sync to it, either with Word Clock or ADAT. There is nohing wrong with ADAT clock....

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

So far-- so good! Now the big one-- is it theoretically possible to link the UFXs to the laptop via MADI? There doesn't seem to be any long-distance (100m) USB repeaters around. I have a FW system connected by LC LC optical fiber-- I wish that was available for USB. The company who made it will be rolling out a USB 3.0 version-- but it will not do 2.0

I suppose this could be seen as Micstasy on a budget-- depending on the quality of the outboard micamps.

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

There is no way connect to MADI directly. You would need format conversion from ADAT to MADI, e.g. the ADI-648, which could take two unit's ADAT signal. Then at the other end you'd either have to go MADI into the laptop (Madiface) or convert to ADAT again.

On the other hand, since USB 3 is downward compatible, that extension may work... Ask them...

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

This is looking promising. If each box is doing 12 channels of mics and one is sending ADAT to the other-- what are the results if the sample rate is 96k rather than 44.1?

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

You only get 8 ADAT channels @ 96k.

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

So 8 ADAT into 12?

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

I am guessing that a headscratch emoticon means WHAT are you talking about? I was wondering if 2 UFX at 96k (both having 12 channels of micpres) would yield 20 channels? Can the host UFX maintain normal channel count with the "incoming" ADAT signal being reduced to 8 thanks to SMUX? IOW a total between the two UFX (@ 96k) of 20 available mic channels?

Re: "daisy chain" via ADAT?

Only the ADATs reduce channel count at 96/192. If you use one of the UFX units as standalone converter connected to the other by ADAT, you can have up to 20 channels with an additional external preamp.
