Topic: Feature request: FOHmix

Hi all,

I've come to love the UFX for most all audio applications and have even used it for front of house mixes, while recording gigs. It's quite awesome and the capabilities are almost endless. However in that situation it's a bit inflexible. I got an idea a couple of days ago: Create an application alongside Totalmix FX, one more suited for live mixing.

So here's my concept. I don't know if it's possible but the features are already in the UFX and Totalmix, it should be a matter of exploiting them from a different angle and they should be compatible/interchangeable.

How's this for a rough basic design? Please fill in with your ideas smile

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

Great idea, Mats.  Laying out TM like a traditional mixer would be a big help for FOH work.  I have seen, and suggested, other ideas to improve the UFX's ability to be used for FOH mixing that would nicely complement your concept:

1) In addition to being able to assign which channels are active, have the ability to reorder the active channels.  This way, for example, if you use UFX pres on channels 9 and 10 for kick and snare but use external pres and converter for toms on ADAT channels 5-7, you can place all the drum faders next to each other on the mixer.
2) Include the ability to control all DSP effects parameters via MIDI.
3) Ideally, develop an iPad app version similar to AC-7 Core so that a laptop (or rackmount computer) runs TM near/on the stage and the FOH mixer can control everything wirelessly.  No more long snake runs!

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

Definately all good ideas! I'm also hoping to see these features included in upcoming TMFX versions.

Eq, dynamics and fx remote-control would be just awesome!

Also, it would be great to be able to have multiple TMFX windows open at the same time, all controlling the internal mixer but adding the ability to have multiple different views of it. Each one could also be assigned to a different controller. Midi, iPad software, or whatever you choose to use. For me this would be the only (although a good) reason to get an iPad.

This way you could use the UFX for headphone mixing while in studio. Or in my case, I'm using the UFX also on stage and want (and need) to have full control over it, and then whoever is mixing outside the stage, could also have control over everything going on inside the UFX.

Perhaps some day.. smile

Matthias,

Any response to the other ideas in this thread?  The issue of adding features to improve the ability to use the UFX as a FOH mixer has come up numerous times over the past several months.  I don't recall seeing any response from RME about whether such features are possible.  Is RME working on, or planning to work on, adding some or all of these features?

Thanks

We have a big list of upcoming changes with fixed priorities. Some of the mentioned stuff is similar, but I will not further comment on details. Keep the nice ideas coming and get surprised some day   :-)

And even if we don't react - you know we read everything in here!

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

These are great ideas! FOH mixer ideas, love it.

Do you realise that I've already sold my old analog mixer, compressors, Lexicon and stuff because this hardware can fill my needs for live usage! Only thing I'd like to have is Noise Gate and 31-band Graphics EQ to main out (so no more GEQ:s neither hopefully tomorrow!)

I'm lucky to have such a great hardware and I'm happy that RME is constantly upgrading features and not forgiving customer and sold unit!

MC: Tell thanks to whole team in RME! Great job and getting better!

Well that sounds promising!

Another idea (posted earlier in another thread but worth reiterating here) is to have the abiilty to use multiple computers or iPads to control different outputs at the same time.  Imagine a 5 piece band each member with an iPad running something like AC-7 Core that is dedicated to his/her own monitor mix.  It would turn the UFX into something like an Avion system.  Might be too much to hope for, but it seems like TM already has 90% of the necessary abilities.

Hoping to be pleasantly surprised some day soon.

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

Adding to the wish list here.  It would be great to have a midi-controlled talkback key, both for FOH and studio work.

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

UFX as FoH is the future, RME really need to get up on this!

Why buy $30k of outboard when TM on a UFX can do it all?  Just a few slight modifications and they are set to go...

PLEASE RME, listen to these people... 31 band EQ and some slight modifications to the layout!

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

Gates.  We need Gates.  And more DSP.  And the remote feature - a real remote, not AC7 or it's ilk.

I dunno.  The responses I've rec'd indicate that UFX is not and never will be for FOH.

But I hope that's not true....

Re: Feature request: FOHmix

DSP is generally an implementation by hardware chips in the unit, so the processing power and bandwidth to the chip is very much determined when the unit was designed. Unless RME purposely left some "headroom" of the DSP processing power, it is unlikely to see the drastic improvements with the units already made and sold. I guess, if RME listens to these requests, then next version (UFX-2 or something) will have the sufficient DSP processing power for the FOH.

Just my speculation.
