Topic: intermitent "host" connection problem

Had my FF800 for about 6+ years with no problems - since upgrading to V3.02 and v2.77 firmware I've been getting intermittent firewire connection problems. Without my doing anything or touching a thing the red "host" connection light will come on and then go off a few minutes later.

I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and mostly using Logic Pro 9.1.5 on an original Mac Pro Quad - though the problem happens with no audio specific apps running. In the time its taken me to type the above the red light has come on and gone off again twice!

The obvious is a cable problem - so I changed my original FW800 cable for a FW400 cable, thereby also checking the ports - no difference in behaviour.

All I can think of is that its maybe a driver incompatibility - maybe because of my now quite old Mac Pro this wouldn't have shown up in testing?

Is the next step to try to reinstall previous drivers? Those from August 2010 - "fireface x86 275" ? Is this even possible?

Anything else to consider?

thanks

edit: updated to add also getting same problem with Mac Pro's front FW ports

edit 2: doesn't seem (so far after about ten minutes) to be happening with FW 400 cable into MacBook also on 10.6.8 but running v3.01 kernel driver

Re: intermitent "host" connection problem

Taken things back to v2.75 driver with 2.77 firmware and all seems much more stable.

Will see how things go over the next day or so.

Re: intermitent "host" connection problem

While it does seem more reliable with the older driver, its still happening when it did not do this in years previously - ever!

Any ideas to try?

Trashing preferences? If so which ones?

Anything else?

Edit- I've ordered a Sonnet Allegro PCIe FW800 card to see if this solves the problem. Should be here tomorrow.

Would VERY much welcome any suggestions as to what else to try, BEFORE I install the new card - so I can send it back unopened ideally!

cheers
