But I doubt that a to small buffer size is the reason for your problem. Maybe a check with the activity monitor when the crackles occur can help to identify another thread or program which eats up the CPU in this moment (CPU jumps to 100% like a hanging Thunderbird in the background). And don't forget the usual stuff: Repair Disk Permissions, turn time machine, Bluetooth and other unnecessary stuff off.

But it was all right, when I used Apogee Duet. with wifi and bluetooth and about 20 programms running!!!
Repair Disk Permissions, turn time machine.. May be, also, 'not power on your computer'? Not power - not crackles/problems.
Very strange..
But listening audio/video files in Finder - very useful thing!!!
