Topic: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

so i have a problem. i have one low cost mic 600ohm that i use on FFUC and the signal is low from the mic. really low - i have to gain the channel about 55 in totalMix channel setting to get usefull signal. the problem is big gain brings big noise from the mic, so no serious recording can be done here. another mic i tested has even worse sighal. so i wanna buy a pro vocal mic for FFUC that can be used normally without gain thing on some normal budget under 300$, maybe something like shure SM series. i don`t want to test my time, just buy the tested working good/pro mic that FFUC likes already. any help apprechiated. thanx!

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

HI,
There are quite a few nice choice for recording Mic for under $300 now.

If you want a condenser Mic then Rode, SE Electronics, Sennheiser, AKG and Shure all make nice ones in the under $300 range that will work great with the Fireface.

For a Dynamic then I'd looks at the Shure Beta series or Audix.

Thanks Chris

The UC is not designed to work best with specific microphones. Any good mic will work just fine. The rest depends on budget and personal taste.

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

i assume if i choose a mic like BEYERDYNAMIC TG V56C [condenser vocal microphone, cardioid, 40 - 20.000 Hz, 190 Ohms, treble boost for transparent signal] i might be alright with the vocal signal? i mean 190ohm mic should give significantly higher signal than 600ohm mic i tried?

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

Why don't you buy a mic pre-amp or try one first? Maybe there is something wrong with the mic so it needs to be repaired.

Vocal mic - you mean - live stage type mic?

I'll try my Sennheiser Condenser (but in the end with everything it will cost over $300) and get back here but I use a pre-amp first (but the cost is just $300 - pop filter is extra, wind screen and such but maybe not needed and the output is high)
and some of those may be cheaper or the same price to adjust the input with the variable input (for microphones vary greatly in output).

Example of one store across the world.

preamps for mics

and the different categories there.

Otherwise, can't try every mic in the world, only the ones in a store to begin with that they carry. Perhaps calling will help with some of these stores and the person there will know what mic goes with a Babyface or UC that work with enough output.
Thumb your fingers through the Internet Yellow Pages.

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

Ah, +12dB gain on my Babyface was fine. +15dB gain I could go into the red if singing loud (and that may not be all that loud), and at +18dB gain on the circular knob I was peaking into the red more.

That is with the Sennheiser Condenser Mic listed above (the MK4).

But there are other similar mics also there so a salesperson may have something even cheaper that works just about as good.
If you want better quality like some people do - then prepare to spend $1000, otherwise, you will have to look at the different mics or get a preamp.

And there is a reason for a preamp - if you want a tube sound - and replacing tubes in the end when the volume goes down again (the tube worn out - dead.)
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TubePRE/
have not tried it, so I do not know.
Look around, that is what the person in the store is for - more familiar with all the different equipment out nowadays.

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

Oh, and on Condenser mics you need the 48v phantom power switch in first before the mic will work if it needs it. The MK4 needs phantom power (48v) to work first of all.

There is an excellent article discussing microphone and preamp interaction located here: http://www.rane.com/note148.html

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

The hardest thing to get over is that fact that the input is automatic. TotalMixFX is only for listening to the signal, not controlling the input, only listening. RME stated that, and out of habit I guess I been going along and thinking I was controlling the input, when I am only controlling the listening. So if you are turning it up that far to listen to it, then the input of your mic is really really weak, and you must have the gain up there going into the automatic level inputs first of all.
I wish it was either, manual or automatic, because I like to tinker around. Have to look at the other RME audio/interfaces and see how they are, just to be curious.

Re: Recommend me tested vocal microphone for FFUC

TotalMixFX is only for listening to the signal, not controlling the input, only listening.

TotalMix FX controls also the analog gain of the preamps before the DA. This is not only for listening, the input signal with the changed gain goes to the driver and will be recorded in the application whne you press the record button. The volume faders in the TotalMix channels on the other hand control only the listening volume. Just like on every hardware mixer. If you don't record an output with the TotalMix Loopback option in your DAW the changed volume works only for the monitoring.
