Topic: Basic routing problem please help

Hi,

I've got an RME fireface UFX and I use Reaper as my DAW.

1. I have a mono mic connected into mic/line 9 of the RME
2. I listen to the output through phono 9.


I would like to hear the output of Reaper on my computer not the RME unit pre FX.

Hi, thanks for all the useful tutorial material, but I have to admit I'm still confused.

The Hardware input is working as the meter is active. I've assigned Reaper's output to Analog 1 (this meter is also active). How do I set up the "control Room" so that I can hear reaper live and not the RME Fireface UFX? Thanks

You need to adjust your faders on the input and playback rows.

First, use Submix mode. It is much more intuitive that way.

Second, select (by clicking on) the hardware output your monitors or headphones are connected to. If I understand you correctly, you are trying to listen on the first headphone output. So in this case click on PH 9/10.  Being in Submix mode, all the input and software playback faders now reflect what is being routed to your headphones.

Third, on the hardware input row make sure the fader on channel 9 is pulled all the way down.  The meter will still show a signal as it reflects the incoming signal, not the post-fader signal.

Fourth, on the software playback row pull the fader on Analog 1 up until you hear the playback from Reaper.

Thanks for the advice, do you know what I need to assign the "main out" to in the control room. Also, do I need to setup the soundcard of my PC or will that not make a difference.

In the control room section (lower right), you can assign the "main out" using the assign button.  Most people assign hardware outs 1/2 as "main" and I believe this is the default.  But, you can freely assign any output pair as mains.  Once nice feature of the "mains" is that you can click "cue" on any output and hear that particular mix in the mains.  This is handy if, for example, you want to check a band's headphone mixes on your own headphones to help set up their mixes.  Just assign your headphones as "mains" and you can easily switch from one mix to the other using the cue buttons.

This is all in the manual.  I know it is confusing at first, but it does not take long to figure out and it is well worth investing the time to understand all the very flexible options in TM.

There is no need to set up your computer's internal sound card unless for some reason you want to use it for additional ins and outs in Reaper.  But TM won't control it, so you'll need to use whatever software mixer is built in to your PC.  Personally, I never use my PC's sound card.
