Topic: How do I hear my digital piano through my RME card?

I recently upgraded my soundcard from my PC's motherboard onboard sound to the RME HDSP9632 and very glad I did! However, there's just one thing I can't figure out...

When I was using my onboard sound, I was able to plug an output from my digital piano into my onboard's LINE IN, and then hear the piano through my headphones which were connected to the headphone jack also on my onboard soundcard.

But I can't seem to do this with the HDPS9632! I've tried everything. Basically, I have a TRS (L/R) to stereo RCA cable (see image http://www.proaudiosolutions.com/product-p/trs-201.htm) with the TRS end connected to the OUTPUT on my digital piano and the two RCA ends feeding into the LINE IN's on my 9632. I then have my headphones connected to the 9632's headphone jack. But no sound! I can't understand it?

If I open Digicheck, I can see the level meters moving (only the L not R for some reason) but no sound comes through to the headphones. They are still working though in this situation as I can play an MP3 for instance and hear it.

Is the 9632 not able to manage an external LINE IN and headphone out at the same time? Surely it can? My motherboard's onboard sound can handle that! Any ideas?  This is really frustrating.

You have to use TotalMix to route the input to the analog output.

Re: How do I hear my digital piano through my RME card?

Thanks Jeff but I'm having some problems. I can hear sound now but it is a very different sound than what I get listening directly to my digital piano - it is a 'thinner', more metallic sound and is a lot quieter, I have to turn up the volume very high on both my piano and my headphones output to be able to hear anything clearly. The other problem is that I can hear a lot of electrical interference coming through the headphones, part of this is because I have the volume so high but it is there faintly anyway.

As I say, I got none of these problems with my motherboard's own on-board soundcard - the sound is not altered in any way so I'm wondering why the sound is so different through the HDSP9632.

Any help appreciated,

thanks
Aaron

What kind of outputs does the keyboard have?

Re: How do I hear my digital piano through my RME card?

Hi Vinark

it has stereo RCA outputs or a L/R TRS output. I get the same issues whether I use a TRS to stereo RCA cable or a twin stereo RCA cable.

Well, you don't provide any useful info (screenshots of mixer/matrix while playing audio, chosen HDSP settings) so we can't help too much. But, if you use RCA, make sure your HDSP analog ins are set to -10, and you are connecting to the analog inputs (not SPDIF in). After that you should have a good input signal in the mixer, and you can record it and also route it to analog out in the HDSP mixer.

Re: How do I hear my digital piano through my RME card?

Sorry for not providing more info. I have a screenshot here to show you my settings below.

I have tried everything but it is not working. I get a very loud electrical interference signal that goes once I remove the RCA cable and the sound of the digital piano through the HDSP9632 is very different to how it sounds direct from the piano itself - very thin, quiet and flat. I have to turn up all volume very loud to hear anything. Any advice appreciated, thank you

Try to hook a cd player to the inputs of the 9632. Does this sound normal?

What is the model of the digital piano?

And just to confirm, if you only plug one of the cables into the RME how does it sound then?
