Topic: Any of you tested the HDSP legacy PCI cards with Z68, X79 mobos?

I have the HDSP 9652 PCI card, which works fine in my older Asus P5K deluxe mobo (P35 chipset).
But I'm out wanna exchange my current older Q6600 computer with an Sandy Bridge or Sandy Bridge-E
i7 type computer.

So those of you still using the older PCI soundcards in combination with the Z68 or X79 chipset with success, please
let us know :-)

I would really love to know how the PCI cards worked in terms of low latency, like with a latency buffer of 32, 64 samples. Is
it possible without any clicks, pops in the audio path?

And it would also be nice to know what motherboard and gfx card brand you used.

I have looked a little into the stuff myself. And many people are happy about the Asus Z68 Pro/Deluxe GEN3 mobos. But I've not
been able to find out anything about performance, and how good it works with very low latency, using the legacy PCI slot and the
PCI -> PCIe bridge.

For me it's all about finding a motherboard (Z68 or X79), where the legacy PCI slot(s) works perfectly with my HDSP 9652 I/O card :-)

You will find informtion in this thread...
The B65 and Q67 chipsets with native PCI implementation may be safer bets.

Thanks Daniel, I did fear some would say that :-) Just kidding, I may have to dig into those two chipsets, and see what they can do. But I must admit, that I'm more into the Z68 chipset mobos, and the newer X79 SB-E chipset, which has quad memory, which could come in handy for sample heavy applications. But it doesn't mean much, if the PCI -> PCIe bridging firmware is bad or not updated. But I have heard lots of positive things about RME's cards in legacy bridged PCI slots.

So I would love to see some extra info about what can be done, and what's not working. But I'll check the topic, thanks.

I'm glad I can finally answer a question! I've built a Windows 7 64-bit system with a ASUS Z68-VLX motherboard, placed my RME 9652 card in there and it seems to work fine. I haven't done extensive testing as this is not my main audio machine, but I get output and can sync through word clock. This is what I like about RME; even older hardware doesn't become obsolete. It was harder to find a mobo with PCI slots actually!

I just built a new PC, with an Asus P8Z68/Deluxe Gen 3, an i7 2700k quad sandybridge,16 gigs of Kingston value ram and an asus silent 210 nvidia graphics card, the pci slot works grerat with the multiface pci card, i then installed Pro tools 10 and everything is working great so far.
I did check with Chris Ludwig and then I checked with Asus tech support, all agreed before hand that they thought it should work, and IT DOES.
I also have a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q895 with the express card going to a multiface as well, i now have 2 multifaces and i am going to use them together to link the 2 computers, the laptop has Cubase 6 and all my plugins on it
I am getting a Apple macbook pro with a i7 quad 2 GHZ- i am looking at using this interface to go to the thunderbolt input

It could be interesting, if you could try and lower your ASIO buffer settings (to 32, 64 samples), and see / hear how the sound behave in your sequencer. Also looking at your ASIO meter, and see if there is any strange high peaks in the meter. Cause I think your cards would probably work fine as long as you don't push the buffers down to a minimum. Then pops, clicks could be appearing in the audio path. But if Asus / Intel has done the bridging firmware good, then the low latency might be perfect.

It would be great, if you could also could check your DPC latency, as it's also motherboard, driver depended:

HDSP 9632 also seems to be working perfectly with ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 and windows 7, 64bit.
So far I've only tested it with 128 buffer setting.
I'll check with lower settings and get back to you.

Yes, it's really the low latency performance that is really interesting with PCI -> PCIe bridges. But in general any buffer settings will do, as long as they're not over 256 / 512. It could be interesting to hear how the sound is (hopefully smooth without any pops, clicks..), when the ASIO performance is peaked out to maximum in the sequencer with low buffer values on big projects with tons of vsti's & plugins :-)
