Topic: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Hello,
Got my fireface 800, I hooked it up, downloaded drivers/firmware all seems well.  however couple things:

when I open cubase clock source and direct monitoring buttons are greyed out, meaning I can not change those 2 things.

2nd - I have a rme adi-8 that I have hooked up to the adat 1 ins and outs of the fireface.  I have one wordclock cable as well and tried running it from the fireface wordclock out to the adi8 wordclock in.  what I am seeing is the adat 1 light blinking on the front of the fireface, does not stay solid.

in fireface settings:
clock mode - master
auto sync reference - adat 1
preffered sync reference - word clock
word clock out - single speed (checked)

ON MY ADI8
A/D - internal
D/A - I tried different settings.  think I ended up with input but don't recall any of them getting th fireface adat 1 light to stay on.
digital input - adat

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Right now, both are on internal clock. Set the ADI-8 to "Input" for AD and DA.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

I'll try that, thanks.  Any ideas on why I no longer have the option of direct monitoring in cubase?  or why I can not choose what wordclock source to use as master there either?

or do these 2 options become obsolete with the fireface?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Where exactly do you see these greyed-out options?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Inside cubase under Device set up is where I used to choose clock source and direct monitoring.  as shown in this pic (from the internet):
http://i41.tinypic.com/1zvr7dg.jpg

but once the fireface is choosen as my interface under the VST audio system menu I no longer have the option to choose clock source or turn on direct monitoring.

I am just wanting to use direct monitoring witht he fireface, or atleast have that option.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Oh and I am on an IMac, not pc.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Hi,
There is no such thing as ASIO Direct Monitoring on a MAC because there is no ASIO in the Mac OS. There is no equivalent to ASIO Direct Monitoring in Core Audio.
You set the clock source from the Fireface 800 control panel.
This is explained on page 38 in the current FF800 manual.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

why did I have the option of direct monitoring with my Yamaha/steinberg mr816?  is that not an asio device?  Just curious really.  Is there anything I want to be conscious of when tracking more than 16+ tracks with the fireface, in the way  of settings?

What do people generally find they need to do when going between tracking larger track counts and mixing and then sometimes needing to do overdubs late in the process (once plug ins and mix is on it's way)?   Do you need to adjust the buffer sizes a lot or do things generally run along fine?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

This looks like a Windows dialog - are you running Windows/Bootcamp on the iMac?
Also, I don't see any greyed-out options, and the dialog isn't showing anything concernint the FF800...

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

sorry, the picture is a generic shot from the internet to illustrate what menu I am talking about in Cubase.  No I am not running windows/bootcamp on my imac.

I do not have the internet at my new space yet so I can not take a screen shot of the greyed out options at the moment.  Like you said, they are not possible I guess for me with the fireface ... but I did have direct monitoring as an option with the mr816 and am wondering why I had it then?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Probably since this is Steinberg software and Steinberg hardware. They can directly control their own product without the actual ADM hooks that ASIO has.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Same with Motu hardware and Digital Performer.

If Steinberg is interested in others to use the same way then they will release a new ASIO SDK with information about it. No clue if that will ever happen, though.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

ok thanks guys.  I tend to get a system working and then have little chance to experiment with other interfaces/converters etc... so little experience there.  But for now I'll get to work with my fireface and learn the best set up for what I need to do.

I Look forward to it.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

so the way people are working is?  Once a session is getting higher in plug ins and tracks and the buffer setting goes higher they use totalmix to send the direct input out to headphones for a musician to do an overdub if needed?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Yes, or always use totalmix. I have an FX unit connected to adat3 (hdsp 9652) which a use for rev and delay on the headphones. In fact it is an EMU 1212 pci card of which I use the FX, the pci and pcie card are also sold without analogue inputs. Very cheap and decent FX for tracking.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

I get that there is no ADM in OSX, but will you help me understand how to setup routing in totalmix to allow recording of plugin instruments within Cubase?

Cubase 6.05
OSX 10.7.3
fireface 800 updated to 2.77

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Thank you Daniel.  I followed the 'subgroup' information after many readings and still had trouble.  However, I did finally figure it out.  The trouble for me was finally getting the correct busses set up in Cubase.  I do believe there is value in struggling through this until you can get your head around it, but also value in a bit more user-friendly information and DAW specific examples.

Cheers.

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Still confused.  Sorry to say.  I have tried recording at my lowest buffer settings and get clicks and pops.  So I have to record at a higher buffer setting.  This induces some latency.  So if I had say a drum kit recorded using 6-12 tracks and then wanted to "drop in" (punch in) on those tracks how would I do that?  If I have to run the buffer with a setting that includes a bit of latency (which you can hear) how do I get a drummer to hear the recorded track and the drop in properly?

Without direct monitoring it all sounds like a hassle.

If I bought Protools would i have the luxury of Low Latency Monitoring with my Fireface?

Re: where is my cubase direct monitoring and adat sync?

Or if I bought bootcamp could I have my direct monitoring back?  would it work then?  and what type of issues could I run into by using Bootcamp?  I am only using this computer to run cubase at the moment.
