Topic: UFX + MADIface on one laptop ?

I've had good results with the UFX on my ASUS C-90 / Sonica build laptop.

A larger location rig is being assembled in modular form and this will have more inputs than the UFX is capable of handling by itself.

A MADI card is the natural progression be it HDSPe or MADIface.  The MADIface appears to make the most sense as it can work with the laptop or with an inexpensive pcie card the MADIFace can also be connected to a full frame PC.

However, the MADIface provides no real monitoring output capability whereas the HDSPe card at least provides an analog stereo output.  But, the HDSPe MADI card precludes the laptop.

Since the MADIface is potentially the preferred device, what are the potential problems of using the MADIface and the UFX together on the same computer?
The UFX would provide the monitor output and also distributed output mixed feeds as required while the MADIface would be the capture device to the computer from a MADI source.   UFX DURec also provides for a stereo mix capture of all the mixed sends.

Totalmix compatibility is the initial concern here as I understand the UFX and MADIface utilize different versions.  There is also the question of ASIO driver for each device. What are the pitfalls here?

I can create a monitor mix within Sequoia and route that accordingly but will this hardware configuration work?  I don't want to be an alpha/beta tester on this; it's an expensive mistake if it doesn't work properly.

Thanks

JM

Re: UFX + MADIface on one laptop ?

If I were you I would make my plan A a MADI D/A device.  For simple needs The Direct Out MA2CHBOX, or for more channels the RME M-16 or M-32 D/A.

Another budget option would be to get a Sonnet PCIe to expresscard box, and use the HDSPe MADI with it's stereo analog out that way.

Either way you will have a complete solution in Totalmix.  Using a UFX would require complicated work arounds.

Re: UFX + MADIface on one laptop ?

UFX and MADIface can't work together (using ASIO) at the same time.
I also had to learn that providing a D/A to the MADI system might be expensive... I went for a ADI 8 QSM, which also enables me to monitor in surround. Today I'm very happy with this solution. I even like the small remote control of the QSM.
