Topic: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

I have set up the phones and main output but I have no idea how to rout individual channels from Ableton into Totalmix?

Say I have a project with 4 channels, 3 MIDI, 1 Audio, how do I then rout each of those channels into individual channels on TMFX? HeadScratch

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

in  the manual it says there are 30 input channels, 30 software playback channels, but i can only see 9?

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

You activate the channels via Live's Preferences -> Audio and then use the I/O section of Live to route tracks to channels. You find more details in Live's manual and its sophisticated help system.

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

You don't route channels "into Totalmix", you need to assign playback to individual channels of the UCX in your audio software. This is explained in the Ableton online help or manual. It's a software functionality, not one of TMFX.

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

What i don't understand is this, say i assign playback of 3 channels, 3 snares samples, to one software playback channel of the UCX.  I then rout it to a different hardware output in TMFX, apply reverb, compression and EQ to that output channel.  I then have set that output playback channel to "loopback", then add a new channel in ableton, set it to "audio from" whatever channel its coming from the UCX which receives then records a new audio?  Is that correct? Can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong? If so then how is that an advantage?  It creates an extra channel in Ableton and i can no longer edit any parameters in real time without having to rerecord a new audio channel? I must be wrong as then what is that advantage of an on board DSP?  Please help, i feel like i have wasted £1000 pounds!

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

i think the dsp part of theses rme devices is mostly usefull for FOH, and then the low latency and the good a/d are mostly usefull for recording / composing / mixing. the device stability itself is usefull for everything.

that's just a thought and the way i use my rme device...

i mean when using ableton ou pt, i complety forget about TMFX and dsp.

when recording in live or pt, i use the TMFX features, such as gain setting or auto level, and also general routing (monitoring, headphones routing). i don't use dsp since i can (later) put some eq/com/verb in a virtual way with plug ins.

but for FOH, quasi zero latency dsp eq/comp/verb can be so ussefull, aren't they ?

Re: New UCX user totally stumped by Totalmix FX using Ableton

The effects are primarily designed for use while tracking, so you can record dry and monitor with reverb/EQ, etc.
