Topic: RME UFX recording 8 drum mikes

I am not sure how the totalmix works . If I want to record a live band i need more mic pres than 4 .. ??  Can I sub mix drums into the total mix seperate of the 4 pre amps in the UFX?
Is this mainly for use with a digital console with an adat connection ?

Could someone explain the signal path from 8 drum mics to UFX to Macbook pro running Logic please, including any converters and pre amps.

TotalMix is not involved if you record inputs in Logic. Every input gets "split" after the AD stage. One signal goes to Logic and the identical signal goes to TotalMix - for monitoring only. No TotalMix setting, effect or fader position is recorded. Logic gets an unchanged input signal - one for every channel.

If you want to create a submix in TotalMix and record this mix instead of an input in Logic there is the so-called Loopback feature (press button in the TotalMix output). It replaces inputs of the UFX with selected outputs of TotalMix. Mix up to 30 UFX inputs in TotalMix to several submixes (with TotalMix effects) and record those submixes instead of the inputs. But I don't think this is what you want to do here.

Thanks for the response Admin Knut. Trying to understand how these guys on Youtube recording bands like The Who say they record using only UFX and TotalMix . They must be using digital consoles with digital feeds back to Total Mix correct? If I were to take a feed from a digital console to record a live band this would be split in Total Mix? Then I could unpack in Logic and edit separate tracks later correct?

You don't need a digital console. TotalMix IS a sophisticated digital console. Chuck Knowledge talk about how he mix FOH without a console in the Youtube video (http://youtu.be/od-TNUGkKjQ). Record is possible in every DAW software on the host system and/or directly in the UFX itself (DURec). The signal is split before TotalMix and the DAW (see above). If you want to record the mixed signal you can use the Loopback feature of TotalMix to record the UFX outputs in the DAW of DURec.
