Topic: DIY Breakout rack panel for Babyface

Hi

Loving the RME interfaces, I built myself yet another rack for when I don't want to bring my 30 kg UFX rack with lots of preamps. This small rack houses an 8 channel preamp (though not RME) as well as a breakout panel for my Babyface. It can interface with the UFX rack if I need lots of preamps, while also being standalone to use with the Babyface on smaller gigs. Just wanted to give some inspiration.

I haven't connected any midi ports yet, only two XLR in/out and headphone output. The last two XLR outputs are not connected to anything. Btw the DB15 connector was a royal pain the rear to solder...

Thx RME for using standard connectors!!

Btw, are there any plans for making a rack mountable breakout panel for the Babyface?

Mats, here is what might make a neater job for terminating the BF extn cable:

Nice solution! I did look for those kind of connectors but I couldn't find it in any swedish retailer.

The problem with this panel connector is with the breakout cable for the RME Babyface itself. The cable has a very big DSUB shell, which makes it impossible to use a recessed panel connector. I had to custom make this using a plastic blank plate which I drilled and carved out with a knife. I then hot glued the male-male connector to the blank plate. Not a very neat solution, but it works. Here's a close up.
