Topic: Multiface problems

hi
recently i installed win7 64bit on my laptop with an multiface I and a CardBus connector
and defined the multiface as my standard output device in windows so stereo works as i am used to
first i didn't recognize any problems
i guess because the standard output device uses the mme driver
and every app like winamp, firefox etc. that uses the standard output works fine
also ableton live 8 and nuendo4 are ok on all eight channels - i guess because they use there own asio drivers ?
but now i run into trouble with software that uses the original rme multiface asio driver
like max/msp and supercollider - the output sounds very distorted / bitcrushed when i use the ASIO Hammerfall DSP driver
i really need this software for multichannel applications and never had any problems on win xp32
i tried to do a workaround with asio4all - it seems to fix the distortion on max/msp but is very strange to configure and i don't know if its stable
for supercollider i couldn't find a solution for multichannel

any idea how solve this ?
an alternative or a fixed asio driver ?
thanks for any help

the driver version is 3.29 and the hardware revision 17

Re: Multiface problems

AFAIK all programs use the same asio driver. So if Nuendo and ableton work ok it looks like max and super have troubles running on win7 64bit. Did you check with them?

With these kind of issues the first thing to try is, different buffer settings and cold reboot.

Re: Multiface problems

thanks for the quick reply
what i tried a lot was changing settings (buffer, sync, samplerate, etc.) and disconnecting and reconnecting of the cardbus
by the way: with winxp 32bit i always had to unplug and reconnect the cardbus after windows sleepmode to avoid crackling/bitcrushed/distorted sound in max/msp

max/msp (http://cycling74.com) is a fresh 64bit build !
ok. supercollider (http://supercollider.sourceforge.net) is a windows port
and puredata via portaudio and "asio hammerfall dsp" doesn't do a beep
puredata with asio4all (http://www.asio4all.com) works with stereo but for multichannel there is the strange mapping again
8x Multiface Analog (1,2), 8x Multiface Analog (3,4), 8x Multiface Analog (5,6)...
so for channel 1 need to select 1 for channel 2 -> 2 and channel 3 -> 9 ! and channel 4 -> 10!
somehow supercollider and puredata know there are only 8 channels (i guess) but to access channel 3 i would need to select channel 10 !
i'm only able to do this strange mapping with max/msp and then still its an weird workaround

;-(

Re: Multiface problems

Ah idea! there is a setting for multiclient mapping in the hdsp setting (maybe second tab?). Try disabling it, that might cure it all.

disabling "multiclient mapping" doesn't help ;-(

ok. some other tests with "ASIO Hammerfall DSP" selected
ableton live8 is able to put the build in testtone on all eight channels without any distortion
ni reaktor5 reduces the crackles if i reduce the number of output channels ! but never gets rid of crackles
audiomulch2 is full of crackles but not distorted like max, supercollider etc.

of course i chanced a lot the buffersize and samplerat of the card
so. why does it work with ableton and with the others not if all of them use the same driver ?

Re: Multiface problems

btw. the cardbus controller is Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) and the driverversion 6.1.7600.16385

Re: Multiface problems

some support would be nice

Re: Multiface problems

Did you flash your PCMCIA card to latest firmware cause you need to have latest firmware for working on win 7 64bit and using latest drivers.

Re: Multiface problems

this one seems to be the latest from 2009 https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/fut_wdm_dsp.zip says its rev.17
which is already installed on my card

thanks

Re: Multiface problems

i still don't get it
if the card wouldn't work at all because there is no 64bit support - ok its just to old
but it works on my win7 64bit system with mme, directsound and a weird mapping workaround mme stereo pairs to asio4all and a weird channel selection in max/msp
so its not totally broken - its just the rme asio driver (11/6/2012) not working properly !?
i don't understand why ? and why its not possible to fix this ???

Re: Multiface problems

It is not the RME ASIO driver not working correctly. It is your outdated laptop that you now try to use with the latest operating system and don't have drivers that fully support it like it did with the OS the laptop got shipped with. Same for its BIOS. Searching for a different Ricoh driver is just the beginning of a long search that - most probably - will never get you 100% satisfied.

Sometimes the simple truth is that a new computer is in order. Which will have an ExpressCard slot then (if you're lucky and still get one).

Re: Multiface problems

my laptop (dell precision m4400) got shipped with vista and later with win7 ! so. its not brand new but also not outdated
but you say your drivers for multiface I with cardbus (flat connector) support win7 64bit in general ?
than i will have a look for a other/better ricoh carbus driver - thanks

Re: Multiface problems

Doesn't that one have an ExpressCard slot as well? Maybe that one works better...
