Topic: Breakout cable extension for AIO

hello, i'm thinking about getting the HDSPe AOI card mainly for digital i/o extending a fireface. the audio computer is located outside the studio to keep the control room quiet. problem is, that all connections would be made directly to the pcie cards very short breakout cable. it looks like a typical standard serial cable on the side connecting to the pcie card.

now the question: can i use a cable (probably serial) to safely extend the breakout cable by ca. 2-3m ? does rme maybe offer such a cable ?

thanks

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

The AIO has no 'standard serial cable on the side'. If it does then you use the Word clock module and only get WC I/O that way. The AIO will also not extend the Fireface because it runs on a different driver. In short: I am confused what you really want to do.

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

the AIO has 2 connector sockets for the breakout cables and a toslink i/o.

simply: how do i extend the length of the breakout cables to 2-3m ?

(it just looked a bit like an old serial socket, but interpreted from your post it is not)

alternatively: is there a breakout box or something available ?

thanx

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

There was a breakout box, the RME Bob-1, including 2 m specially shielded D-subs. If you want to make your own cable just make sure that MIDI can not leak into the analog input lines. On the digital I/O make sure SPDIF coax quality is not reduced by too high capacitance or wrong impedance of the cable.

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

thanks matthias, i think i now found a solution i was looking for - don't know why i was so hooked on the AIO:

HDSPe AES-32 plus BO25MXLR4M4F3 3m breakout cable (or maybe a BOB-32 breakout box) - perfect!

cheers

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

well, ok i just ordered the HDSPe AES ! still don't know what cables will be included. on the rme website it is mentionend that there's a 3m and 6m breakout cable available: BO25MXLR4M4F3 / BO25MXLR4M4F6. anyway, it seems i can't find them anywhere on the web. where can i get them?

on the other side i found this one: http://www.thomann.de/de/rme_bo25mxlr4m4fr.htm
will this be applicable for external gear via aes i/o to the hdspe aes ? or are there better/other alternatives ?

[my main task still is to overcome a 3m distance between computer and converters]

There is no cable included, and the one you linked to is exactly what you need.

Re: Breakout cable extension for AIO

the hdspe aes has just been installed, works!

i decided to go with custom 4m vovox cables: d-sub -> 8x aes and bnc wordclock.
system is up and running ;]

cheers
