Topic: Connecting Focusrite OctoPre, RME ADI-2 and Fast Track Pro

I just upgrade my rig by getting a RME ADI-2.
But I'm still confused on how to hook these things up.
My guess is, OctoPre --> RME ADI-2 via analogue i/o and then RME ADI-2 --> Fast Track Pro via s/pdif --> computer --> Fast Track Pro --> RME ADI-2 via s/pdif --> studio monitor via TRS. Is this correct ?

What about clocking ? I'm new to this, so really confused about the "clock" thing. I've seen some high end gear with world clock setting onboard, but my Fast Track Pro don't have those kind of settings, so what should I do ? I see some topic saying things about setting the ADI-2 to be master. etc etc....but I have no clue what they are talking about.

Sorry for this dumb question ~

Hi,

i think it looks just right the way you plan to do the cabling.

For the clocking: i recommend you to read the ADI-2 manual carefully for understanding the basics, it's described quite well there.

But for starting: When you set the ADI 'Clock' switch to 'Coax' it should clock itself to  whatever samplerate it's getting from the Fast Track. The ADI would then be the slave.

When you select a samplerate on the ADI by pressing the same clock-switch, he will be Master. I have no idea about how the Fast Track will handle an incoming clock signal, probably you have to set it to 'slave' in the control panel or wherever that's possible (if it is possible at all, if not then the ADI will have to be in slave mode -> 'Coax' setting).

For clarification: you don't need a wordclock cable or connector in this setup, the clocking information will be embedded in the digital stream (the SPDIF connection via RCA or ADAT cable).

Thanks very much for your help !!
I've book looking to the Fast Track Pro control panel, and I can't find anything about the "clocking" thing, so I guess my only choice is to let the ADI be the slave ? Cuz some ppl say its better to let the ADI be the master, since it has better AD/DA conversion.
Or, do I need to set it up from inside the DAW ? Im using Cubase by the way...

Re: Connecting Focusrite OctoPre, RME ADI-2 and Fast Track Pro

hi again,

i just googled 'fast track pro master slave' for you :-) and found out that it will be in slave mode when getting digital input. you can't set up the fast track as master. so i guess you should just set the correct sample rate on your ADI (for example 44.1 or 48, if you want to work with 88.2 khz it has to be 44.1 and DS (=Double Speed)). i don't know about the cubase settings, maybe look at the manual if you have to define a sync source. or just try out and go trouble shooting if it doesn't work the simple way...

I'll try it !!
