Topic: Software Playback port used

Sorry if i'm missing something obvious, but how exactly can I control which software is using which “Software Playback”-Channel?
On my computer with OS X 10.8.2 most applications use AN1/2 to playback.
Some softwares, like for instance QuickTime Player and VLC send their output to SPDIF instead.
Is that completely random or where is that defined?
Where can I control which output a software uses? The system preferences don't allow me to do this, neither does the Audio-MIDI-Setup.

You most probably play back material that requires a digital output port, like movies with Dolby sound.

Can you not do that in Audio Midi Setup? This is what I do in 10.7.5.....chose Configure Speakers in the lower right corner in the output tab, and then select output ports for the different channels.

Obviously....this will apply to any software that only outputs to system default.
