Re: NAMM: RME announce 5 new products!!

Some things that come to mind:

1. Is the transmission of the data via 8P8C Cables (Ethernet) part of the AES10/MADI specification? Or is this an own (proprietary?) RME standard?
2. Soundcraft is also using MADI over 8P8C Cables in their SI/VI Stageboxes/Consoles. Is it compatible?
3. You mention that one of the advantages is that 8P8C Cabledrums are virtually available everywhere. Well, the Problem is that all these 8P8C Cabledrums use Ethercon connectors (which is btw. fully backward compatible to RJ45 connectors), so the new RME products are kind of incompatible with existing cabling solutions. Is there a reason for <not> using Ethercon?

Intresting Questions...would like to hear an answer too:-)
Mainly Question 2!

Re: NAMM: RME announce 5 new products!!

I would be very interested if there are plans for a daughter card for RME HDSPe cards, e.g. HDSPe MADI FX, with a RJ45 connector. This would enable to go from the new MADI Router directly into the Audio Card, which would make a lot of sense.

Thanks,

Dirk

No, it is currently not part of the specification. But there is a AES task group on MADI over twisted-pair cable (project AES-X213) which we have joined with the intention to be fully compatible to this standard.

Unfortunately, not at this moment and it will not be compatible without some kind of adapter in future. RME and other manufacturers use common Ethernet PHYs to transport MADI signals, while Soundcraft uses a completely different technology.

Yes, Ethercon connectors require too much space. However, in the design process of a stage box you could just use a 19" faceplate with Ethercon-connectors which you connect with short patch cables to the RME device. This way, you have exactly the connections you need while the others are protected in the depth of your flight case.

We are looking into it.
