RME User Forum → FireWire & USB series → Assign Mac volume control to Phones out on Babyface?
Coming from the Apogee Duet 2, I thought it would be a small matter to assign the Mac volume control to the Phones 3/4 out on the RME Babyface.
Doesn't seem so easy, though. Is it possible at all?

Not possible, as far as I can see. But you already have hands-on volume control with the rotary knob, so why do you need it?
Actually, I take it back.
If you go to Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI setup, select your Babyface, and click "Configure speakers" you can. Set the "speakers" to 3/4 instead of 1/2 and the keyboard volume control works for Phones instead of Line Outs.

Aha - even nicer! Thank you!
Btw, any idea why the volume of 1/2 and 3/4 differs, even though the faders are link? They even start at different dB points - 1/2 starts at -140 (according to Audio Midi control panel), while 3/4 starts at -90 dB. This means they are situated at different dB levels all the time, even though they are linked and both controlled by Mac volume.
Both can be set to -140 dB in the Control Panel. If they are synchronized before they are linked together they stay synchronized. If they have a difference while linked, they keep this difference.

Sorry to dredge up a really old thread, but how do I do this in the Audio MIDI Setup?
Do I need to create a 'Multi-Output' or 'Aggregate' Device?
I'm using Mountain Lion.
