Topic: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Hello all,

Can/will RME divulge the anticipated release date for the MADIface-XT interface?  And any chance of more detailed specs?  Mainly interested in the DAC and its converter latency, and if the Headphones are tied to the XLR Outs or of they are on their own DAC channels.

Also, what happened to all of the pics in the other thread?  Are some of these newly announced products being pulled?

Anxiously awaiting the purchase of a MADI-FX or MADIface-XT this summer (hopefully the latter)!

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Guten Morgen! Slowly, Randy. Take your morning coffee, sit down, relax... :-)

Phones share channels? Of course not. The pics were pulled because the links on the website had been fixed. The unit is expected to ship around July. If you order one I will make sure you are among the first to receive it. Long-time premium costumers get premium delivery, sozusagen.

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Thanks M.C.  I assumed the Phones would share the Main Outs like the BF - good to hear this unit will have 4 discrete analog out paths.  Are these analog outs assignable, or hard-patched to MADI Outs 1-4 (or whatever)?  I also assume it's using the ultra-low-latency ADC and DACs from the UCX?

July is about perfect for my anticipated time-line - I'll be working through GC Pro.

PS - Saw the video Audiofan posted - Made me drool even more.  Top notch guys!  I'm glad I didn't splurge on the MADI-FX last summer...

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Don't want to sound ungrateful because the MADIface-XT looks amazing but I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised that DURrec isn't on this device.
DURec is such an amazing idea that I thought it would get crammed-uhm, I mean to say, carefully engineered, into every higher end box from here on out.
Is it a USB bandwidth problem, or just a lack of available space in the box itself? Either way, this one looks nice. That USB3/PCIe combo makes it so flexible.

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

DURrec would be a neat feature, but expecting the MADIface-XT to handle 192 WAVE recording channels to a USB Stick is probably not a reliable proposition.  Buy a cheap laptop with USB3 and run Reaper or something - should do fine as a bare-bones WAVE recorder wink  If you need the insane I/O capacity MADI offers, then you probably aren't using a highly portable setup to begin with - making this omission less of an inconvenience IMO.

Can RME clarify my questions above?

Are the 4 discrete Analog DAC's assignable (in TM or whatever), or are they hard-patched to certain MADI output channels?  What about the two Analog Inputs - are they hard patched to any specific MADI Input channels, or freely assignable?

Is the MADIface-XT using the ultra-low-latency AD/DA chips from the UCX?  If not - what chips is it using (equated to what current RME product in terms of conversion latency?)

Lastly - what will the ASIO driver report to the host with regard to latency offsets?  I'd assume it's NOT compensating for the internal AD/DA, but rather reports the MADI digital only latency (like a Digiface)?  Hoping this is the case as not to cause issues in Nuendo/Cubase when using low-latency MADI converters for external insert loops (can cause issues if using converters faster than the MADIface-XT's built in AD/DA's, but depends on what the driver is reporting).

Still shooting for a June/July USA release?  I made room on the credit card just for this rather large purchase smile  I've got ants in my pants on this one.

They are separated (or additionally). Easy to tell by the channel numbers that we published.

Randyman... wrote:

No. It uses the AD converter of the Fireface 800 (average speed), the DA of the UFX/M-32 DA (quick).

Not yet clear. Thanks for the comment, nice hint.

"A total of 196 audio inputs and 198 audio outputs" - But of course! fryingpan
So the analog I/O will be available as discrete channels in the driver - too friggin' cool IMO.  I assume that also means they show up discretely in TM.  TM-FX will be new to me - can't wait to explore the possibilities it offers me (one of the main reasons for my upgrade).

Good enough for me.  Not quite the jaw-dropping single-digit numbers the UCX posseses, but still quicker than the DAC's on my SSL converters!  My plan is to use the two stereo DAC's for places where the lowest monitoring latency matters most in my particular setup.  Probably won't need the analog inputs, but nice to have them available regardless...

Indeed - I'm sure you've seen my name pop up in plenty of threads on this very topic wink  Even if you decide to include the AD/DA offsets in the driver, the fact that they are still quicker than my MADI AD/DA's should be fine in my setup (just don't want to create a need to enter negative delay calculations with external DA/AD insert loops - this is not possible in Cubase/Nuendo).  I've mentioned creating a "Tick Box" in the driver's GUI that could toggle between reporting internal AD/DA latencies or not.  This might be something to consider since the driver does not seem to be finalized at the moment.  It could even allow a 3rd option where the user can manually enter AD/DA offsets (separate AD and DA values) for precise "driver level" alignment for external MADI AD/DA's (instead of needing to specify it in the DAW software as a single combined AD+DA offset).

Hello again,

It is now August 2013.  Does RME have any time estimate on when the MADIface-XT will be available to USA Retailers?  I have a big session (well, big for me) planned in September, and would like to know if I can plan on using Totalmix FX for it (would obviously want a few weeks with the new card to become fluent in TM-FX before the session).

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Hello RME peeps,

I went ahead and pre-ordered a MADIface-XT from GC-Pro.  Should be getting one of the first units when they begin shipping!

I'd also like to order the External PCIe card and cable to get that additional cost out of the way while I have some room on my MasterCard.  Does RME have any vetted External PCIe cards to recommend?

I saw a few E-PCIe cards casually mentioned in another thread, but was curious what card(s) RME is physically using in their test PC's to vet operation with the MADIface-XT (I'm on a Sandy-Bridge-E system running W7-64Bit).  Also if you have any cable recommendations - just need something short in the 1-1.5 Meter range (3-5 feet or so).  I don't want to be futzing with possible compatibility issues once I finally get this lovely (and costly) box in my grubby hands! big_smile

And of curse - still wondering if you can divulge the anticipated ship date for US Retailers...

Thanks so much! cool

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

The XT is in perfect health, although we regret that the initial shipping date had to be pulled back a bit.

The PCIe Express and PCIe that we use is from Matrox and Sonnet.

External PCIe cable you have to check for yourself. There is only one (!) manufacturer (Molex) and the price is therefore the only thing to decide about where to buy it.

Shipping date I will anounce here. But it should be October indeed, not December.

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Much appreciated as always MC.  Looking for a descent deal on the PCIe card and cable now.  Have you tested the 3 Meter cable along with the 1 Meter cable Sonnet offers?  Any issues going with the 3 Meter (~9 foot) cable in your testing?

Will the XT use the same wired remote box (ARC) as other RME "remote capable" units, or will it eventually get a beefed up/specialized remote controller after launch? (if you can say anything at this time).

FWIW - Mouser has pretty good prices on the Molex External-PCIe cables - and they stock additional lengths (picked up a 1M and a 2M - already got them!).

My Sonnet External-PCIe card is likely arriving today or early next week, and I'm ordering the RME ARC from GC-Pro on Monday.  Piling on the debt tongue

I coincidentally received my ARC today - looks like a sturdy piece of kit!  The included adhesive label sheet for the assignable buttons is a nice touch IMO.

All I need now is the MADIface-XT and some time to become comfortable with TM-FX.  Any hints on a ship date? (Just saw your Thomann link - November it is! - PS - I believe the PGA2505 is the digitally-controlled mic preamp chip for the two front XLR inputs)

Additional Q on MIDI-over-MADI:  Am I correct that I could send MIDI (over MADI)  from a slave DAW that contains a PCIe MADI card to the MADIface-XT in my primary DAW over an Optical MADI connection, and then be able to assign this MIDI (over MADI) Input to a Cubase/Nuendo MIDI Track for MIDI recording?  I only have a single RME MADI card at the moment, so I've never used MIDI-over-MADI just yet - Thanks!

Yes, just like that. If you send Cubase MIDI data out on HDSPe MADI "MIDI 3" it's embedded in the MADI output. Then just receive the input on MIDI 1 or 2 (optical ports on the MADIface XT).

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

The Matrox thunderbolt adapter is one of a few options you can use to attach the Madiface XT to a laptop. The two basic ways of connecting are via USB (either USB 2 or USB3) or via PCI Express.

When using External PCIe, you are simply attaching the XT to your computers PCI Express system. It can be attached via:

1) a PCIe Card (Express Card for laptop or Internal PCIe card in a desktop). Both of these cards simply add an External PCIe x1 connector to your setup.
2) a thunderbolt to External PCIe x1 adapter.

Both of these methods are simply ways to externally access the PCIe bus of your chipset. In a previous post, I had some links for the various products suitable for this task. I have copied it below:

External PCIe is used in higher end video set-ups, hard-drive arrays, expansion chassis products and larger industrial setups. External PCIe is basically a really fast simple interface, that extends PCIe speeds outside of a computer chassis. The PCIe card/Express Card connection method doesn't have the nifty daisy-chain approach of Thunderbolt, because all it is set up to do is provide a stable high bandwidth connection to an external device. Importantly it also provides a locking connector, the lack of which can often be a problem in high bandwidth professional environments.

Companies using this external PCIe technology (including via Thunderbolt adapters) include Magma, Sonnet, Matrox:

PCIe to External PCIe internal desktop host cards:
http://www.magma.com/pcie-x1-host-card-eex1
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/qiopcie.html
http://www.adorama.com/VDMRPCIEADP.html
http://www.ioi.com.tw/products/prodcat_ … ostID=2053

ExpressCard to External PCIe internal desktop host cards:
http://www.magma.com/expresscard34-host … aptop-ex34
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/qioexpresscard34.html
http://www.adorama.com/VDMREXP34ADP.html

Thunderbolt  to External PCIe adapters:
http://www.sonnettech.com/product/qiothunderbolt.html
http://www.adorama.com/VDMRTADP.html

Here are some Madiface XT videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijPLMZJTVP0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qh63FNQslA

Please remember that external PCIe x1 is one of two basic connection methods available on the Madiface XT box, the other being the ubiquitous USB, which offers a simple connection method without the need for any additional cards (on both Desktop or Laptop). USB3 unlocks all of the units i/o, whilst USB2 simply reduces the channel count. Given the stability and success of RME's other USB products, I think you can be assured of a robust solution, using either connection method.

This MadiFace XT can therefore easily be used both on location and in a fixed studio environment, with minimal cabling changes required. If you prefer to use thunderbolt, it simply requires the use of a Thunderbolt to External PCIe x1 adapter. Alternatively, you can install a PCIe to External PCIe x1 card in your desktop, or use an ExpressCard to External PCIe adapter for your laptop. If you want even less hassle, then USB3 is the answer.

I'm really looking forward to using one of these in the near future.

Hope this info helps.

Kind regards,
George

I'm trying to see if I have enough time to pick up another $,$$$ piece of gear until the MADIface-XT is actually shipping.  I'd hate to be tapped out on the credit card when I get the call from GC-Pro that "Your MADIface-XT pre-order just came in"!!!  But I do have other purchasing needs, and would like to pursue them if the MADIface-XT delivery will still be a month (or more) away.

Re: MADIface XT - Release Date?

Holy cannoli!  The MADIface-XT is a beautiful and elegant piece of gear.  Love the front panel display (makes me smile), and TMFX is the bees-knees compared to my old basic TotalMix experience.  The Control Room section absolutely rocks, and the ARC should integrate nicely (will experiment with that tonight).  Ability to hide channels = YES YES YES!!!  I will eventually get into the MIDI Remote stuff - that also seems to be very flexible and powerful.

I do wish it had the "Top Shelf" DAC's from the UCX and MADI-FX for the absolute lowest-latency performance (kind of curious for the rationale for using the specific AD/DA chips RME did in a "Premium Line" product / the single most expensive PC Interface RME currently makes), but I'm content with the onboard conversion (same general latency as my main MADI AD/DA's - so that's kind of nice).

Well worth the wait - Jump in with both feet if you have been eyeing this awesome unit...
