Topic: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

History:
I have an i7, Win-XP SP3, that has run stable with a pci version of the Hammerfall MADi for years. latest 3.3.8 driver
The card quit working, (old dried out capacitors).

Problem:
I replaced the PCI-MADI card with a PCIe-MADI card. Same driver, flashed the card to make sure firmware is the latest.
Periodically the audio output will just stop. It does not matter if I was presently working with my DAW software at the time of loss or if the system had been idle for a long time. The only way I have found to get it working again is to reboot.

I noticed on the hammerfall DSP settings control panel that when things are working correctly my normal "sync check" display reads.....

Wordclock_sync
MADI_sync
TCO_no lock (don't have the TCO card)
sync In_no lock (don't use this either)

When things stop working the "sync check" display reads....

Wordclock_sync
MADI_sync
TCO_sync
sync In_sync

Anyone seen this problem?
Have any ideas on what is going on ???

Thanks,
Brain

Re: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

Changing settings in the Settings dialog does not help? Does TotalMix still communicate with the card (input levels...)? I expect this wrong display just to show that the card no longer communicates with anything, it just froze. Can you try a different PCIe slot?

Re: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

MC,

When not putting out audio, you could not change control panel settings, there was no signal showing on Totalmix, and I do not have another PCIeX-1 slot, I do have and X4 and X16 slot.

On the advise of the US tech support (just before they left for the convention in Anaheim) I check and disabled any remaining power management  items and made sure no BIOS issues remained. It has been 2 days since we made those changes and the system has not dropped the audio to my ASIO supported programs (Nuendo and Wavelab). So I will have to wait until is misbehaves before I can give you any more information to work with.

Thanks,

Re: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

There is no problem to use the card in a x4 or x16 slot.

Re: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

Funny how this goes...
I came in this morning and the problem is back. I started changing settings in the Hammerfall control panel. I could change settings, but they did not get rid of the false readings of
TCO_sync         (remember I don't have the TCO card)
sync In_sync    (remember I don't use this either)

and the card did NOT start working again.

As I was changing settings I noticed the mouse was sluggish, then the cursor stopped moving altogether. PC frozen.
did a soft reboot. Hammerfall control panel looks normal, and sound output works.

I have had some other strange issues with my PC over the past year, I would like to describe them in order to see if there are other contributing factors to THIS HDSP-MADI problem.

For the past year 2 things have been happening regularly....
1. My Motu Midi driver is dropped every time I have to reboot the PC.
2. While my ASIO related programs (Nuendo & Wavelab) always work, the PC randomly losses the ability to output audio from Sony CD architect and any web browser. I note that when I don't have audio from all programs that in Win-xp's.... "control panel/Sounds and Audio devices Properties" I do not have the madi card showing as an available device. All settings are greyed out. I cannot set Volume tab, I do not see any device options on the audio tab, I cannot set or change settings on any tab. Sometimes the problem will randomly go away, but more often when broken it stays broken for weeks.

Now for an even weirder observation.
In the hope that I could at least get rid of the Motu driver dropping, Yesterday I got the latest driver off Motu's website. I installed. I tested and when I reboot the PC it still drops the driver.
But here is the interesting part, I noted that I had full function of all audio from all programs and settings control over the "control panel/Sounds and Audio devices Properties" page.

So today when the PC froze up (due to theHDSP-MADI issue) and I rebooted, I found I had lost audio from those select programs again and that I had lost control of "control panel/Sounds and Audio devices Properties".
Since I knew that I would have to reinstall the Motu driver anyway, I did, and found I had ALL audio from all programs again.

So..... Driver conflict issues ??
Why do I drop Motu driver (I am in contact with Motu about that)
and.. Why am I still losing the HDSP-MADI ????

Where do I go from here, how do I test/change in order for us to Fix this issue.

Thanks,
Brain

Re: PCIe MADI periodic loss of audio output

So a little under 3 hours later, I loose audio again.
Hammerfall control panel shows the same incorrect status...
TCO_sync
sync In_sync

So I moved the card to a PCIe-x16 slot, HDSP-MADI card showes a red error light.
I move the card to a  PCIe-x4 slot, HDSP-MADI card showes a red error light.
I move the card back to it's original PCIe-x1 slot and the card is fine.

Depending upon what you think is happening I can only think of 2 other test.

1. I have another PCIe-x1 slot, but it sits under the headsink for the video card. I could move the video card, put the MADI card in the last (untest) PCIe slot. (knowing that I will have to find and load video drivers)

2. put the card in a empty test computer and run it for several days to see if it is the card or the Motherboard or ????
(I still have my old PCI madi card I can use for my production computer)

Have there been any issues like mine with other users ????
