Topic: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

Sorry Manolo for hijacking your thread. More than a year ago many people on our newsgroup already made stunning bitmaps for TotalMix. Let's try to collect all the info and examples in this thread.

Hi,

I think the Total Mix is a very poweful tool but I don't like the design, a bit old.

I tried to make a GUI that I prefer :

Total Blue V1

Total Blue V2

Total Black

Black Red

Black Blue

Green Orange

Download

If you like it and if RME is agreed, I can let the .bmp to RME stuff (for free of course). I use Ressource Hacker to replace .bmp but I would be sure that the compilation went fine (it works at home).

Thanks for your opinions.

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

I agree you with you, seems like the designer took his inspiration from the Cubase VST 5 mixer.
I like yours much better, because you can see things easier.
I favour usability over pure aesthetics in such applications.
Nobody actually looks at such an interface expecting eye candy, what people expect is to be able to get an overall picture at a glance, and quickly identify the setting they want to change/check.
IMO, TotalMix appearance has room for improvement on this side.
A part from that, it rocks, as does the hardware!

rwil, i must say i preferred the blue version ...
I'll try it myself this week-end if have some time, and post what i've done here
In the meantime i'd better concentrate on choosing the right color for my SPAM SPAM SPAM. 'Resource hacking' would be too expensive there wink

Best luck with the SPAM SPAM SPAM! My wife is waiting for the bedroom since few months; I tried to convince her that anyway no such difference in the dark....:-) ...well no luck yet...

@manolo: it could be nice to put jpg instead bmp; it's pretty slow here to get them!

I've updated the graphics so it's clearer I think and let it in .jpg format.

I like the looks... But only Matthias can decide.

Blue one looks nice.
I agree about giving Total Mix a makeover, just for clarity's sake.

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

And if may, one more suggestion: i think the gui could be even clearer and look less cluttered if the horizontal separating bars were simply removed.
Just my opinion ...

Inspired by the first poster, i did a similar job on redesigning my Hammerfall Mixer.

light on the eyes, yet clean and defined. Also it has Digicheck's levelmeter color wich i find very "plasmatic".

So is there going to be an option added in future versions that allows changing the skins?

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

How do i go about editing the total mix design? What file(s) to modify, and with which software?

Sorry if this is a stupid question....but i would be interested to give it a shot!

Sam

PS: I really like yours Sander but all the numbers along the faders make it a bit cluttered - i get dizzy! If there was only the numbers for the metering scale it would be better in my opinion - but still keeping the little symbol for 0db on the fader. I really like your Blue one Manolo, very clear and easy on the eye....:) how do i get it on mine???? Cheers

That Looks great! I like it also because the controller look bigger.

A Cubase 4 Design and ableton would also be cool

Hi Sam, you can download Resource Hacker to extract bitmap files and replace them.

Sander, I really like your "try". The thing I don't like is that we don't see the strip channels by 2 : In 1 + In 2, In 3 + In 4 etc... There's no separators. I think the right panel with MASTER, VIEW etc... could be a bit improved smile. How do you change the font of dB value please ?

So is there going to be an option added in future versions that allows changing the skins?

It would be cool that each user could submit a skin and that we would have the option to download and choose the one we prefer :-).

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

Ok Manolo i got that far....so now i need all the little bmp files you made so that i can replace the standard ones with your modified ones no? Or can I just carve up your full mixer example you linked to and use that to replace them? Can i download your little individual BMP's somewhere?

Cheers

Sam

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments.

Qoute: all the numbers along the faders make it a bit cluttered - i get dizzy! If there was only the numbers for the metering scale it would be better

I agree (partially), but leaving everything out is not THE solution. The scales of the slider and the meter differ, so leaving out the scale of the slider leads to confusion in a way.

Quote: The thing I don't like is that we don't see the strip channels by 2 : In 1 + In 2, In 3 + In 4 etc... There's no separators.

That's why there is a L or an R above the meters. I'll think about a more grafical indication of L and R channels.

Quote: I think the right panel with MASTER, VIEW etc... could be a bit improved

If you mean the text allignment, I think you are right.
The space is limited, too limited for this font(size). I didn't want to make the font too small to read, maybe 1 size smaller will do, or a different font.

Quote: How do you change the font of dB value please ?

I don't know. Maybe Matthias can give us a hint.
I'm actually more interested in changing the font COLOR!!! Matthias, can you tell us how?

-------

I also have some comments for Matthias:

- Some object in the resources are not used and some are used for multiple/different purposes, mixer and matrix. (objects that are ment for the background of the textboxes.) The displayed sizes are not the same and differ for no appearant reason... I think.

- Also an old "bug" that was fixed on the pc version a long time ago:
The position of the preset buttons "4" and "8" is 1 pixel off to the left.

I let you know when I have a new version.

grtz,

Sander.

Also an old "bug" that was fixed on the pc version a long time ago:
The position of the preset buttons "4" and "8" is 1 pixel off to the left.

On PC (and perhaps on MAC), the last row of INPUT and PLAYBACK channels is also 1 pixel off to the left. You can see it in my screenshot (the row where "Phones" is written).

Sam, you need my .bmp files. I'll finish the skin (there are some good ideas from Sander fryingpan) and put them online.

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

After taking some of your comments into considderation, this is mij final version, I think....

TotalMix V3.1

For some reason the textboxes are not displayed correctly, this is only in the picture.

- I decided to leave the scale numbers out to reduce clutter, these can only be correct in one meter range (60dB or 40dB), so now I can still choose.
- Also, I did some things to improve L R visual grouping/localization and still keep some separation between tracks.

grtz,

Sander.

I like it sander! How can i get your skin you made for my Totalmix on my MacBook Pro?

What software do i need here, I have reshacker for XP but what for OS 10.5?, and could i kindly use your files you have made to replace the resources?

Cheers
Sam

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

you don't need anything special on a osx 10.5 to change the totalmix skin.

just do the following:

- download resource file

- quit totalmix in the dock.

- "show package contents" of fireface app

- replace contents/resources/fireface mixer.rsrc

- restart totalmixer.

goodluck

Thanks Matthias, the Sander's skin helped me to reach this one :-).

I put an arrow on the graphic bug I reported before : http://photos13.free.fr/Total_mix_blue_bug.jpg

If in the "Output" row, at the extreme right, we could use an other bitmap than the one to fill the empty "Playback" columns, that would be great fryingpan.

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

Lol, nothing but I search a way to have only one file that everybody could import with Resource Hacker or an other software. It takes time to replace each bitmap and I'm sure it could be done on one shot. I don't see in Resource Hacker a way to do it in one time. You could export (save) all bitmaps but not the opposite. If someone knows if it's possible, let me know and I'll let the file, if not, I'll let bitmap files in a .zip.

35

Re: Archive: The official New GUI for Total Mix thread (not TotalMix FX)

Yeah i saw the same thing yesterday looking how to import some sort of 'EDL' for the images...but i could see anything

Anyone know of an alternative to resource hacker for this in winxp?

Or maybe just share your FirefaceMixer.exe file? What else does this file control other than the UI? any settings?

I've updated graphics to avoid mismatching between the manual and the reality. So, mute is orange and phase reversal state in blue as you can see in the screenshot (updated). You can find the firefacemix.exe updated at the same link I sent to you.
