do i need an external hard drive with own power supply for USB recording from front panel USB

does the USB on UFX have capacity to power a bog standard portable HD or SSD that does not have it's own power supply and relies on USB power from the host?

If the USB drive (pen drive or external hard drive) develops a glitch or problem....will the data sent via adat by USB to my computer also be vulnerable?
