The donation campaign got completed, not stopped, and the last bit donated Focusrite themselves. As far as I know Geoffrey Bennett is based in Australia and he intended to use raised funds for the hardware only, as he does the work itself for free.

Link to the campaign was posted as an example. Actually not quite fortunate one, because as mentioned above, it did not fund the development, but the testing hardware only.

You can only offer such an interface with FPGA, first class drivers, TotalmixFX, DIGIcheck, headphone output, at such a low price if you don't implement some features, e.g. FX chip, stand-alone operation, Class Compliant mode ...
The Digiface USB already offers some special features like four ADAT ports, which can all be switched to SPDIF protocol if needed.

But I think it is a good hint to give this device at least Class Compliant mode, even if it should cost a few Euro more, so it can be used more flexible.

That would mean then also more prospective customers / buyers, if one could connect it to Apple IOS devices or also Linux.
If you then want to record with an iPAD, then you can easily connect your most beautiful preamps via ADAT up to 192 kHz even without these preamps have CC mode, which is a great feature of the Octamic XTC. But it is not available at the moment and the 12Mic has no CC mode for USB implemented as far as I remember. Is a pure management interface for firmware upgrades.

I think that would make sense if you could then use the Digiface as "universal adapter" for all possible preamps and ADDA converter, which themselves have no USB CC mode to be connected to IOS devices or Linux.
And that would include not only RME devices, but also others.
Which would basically lead to even more potential buyers.

So lets hear whether RME likes that idea or whether it could be possible to implement now or for a later generation of Digiface USB, if the FPGA should be full ...

As a really satisfied user of an HDSP9652 for ten or fifteen years now on linux (slackware), i wanted to stay with RME for my last two USB-Devices. Then missing Linux-support for their devices brought me to a competitor with class-compliant interfaces. And there was a choice not only within the modelrange of one manufacturer, but between different manufacturers. Now i'm in need of another audio-device (Digiface was my choice), but nothing has changed...
It's easy to say "it's up to alsa", but in fact: where is class compliance?

Many things have already been discussed here: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 09&p=2

Basically, it would be great to have go for class-compliant mode for the USB interfaces plus having TotalMix for Linux. This would mean that the Interface would have to create a second device for the mixing communication, which might not work without a hardware change. It could be mapped to the standard usb-mixer, like e.g. for the old Focusrite Scarlett series, but the alsamixer will just burst into the user's face. So it might be the best idea to go via MIDI internally, and as it seems many commands of TotalMix are available to MIDI already: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=24437

For my old Fireface 400, there is ffado-mixer als a TotalMix replacement and it is way behind the original I usually do my mobile recording on OS X these days, because of this. Usually you hear people saying OS X is king in media production, but this MacBook Pro 2017 that I have is by far the shittiest computer I ever owned. No connectors, and slow as hell. TotalMix slows it down because of its graphics (the meters, I assume), and so does the Blackmagic ATEM Software Control for video switchers. Plus, due to a current bug/change in OS X, one can run into having to load RME drivers manually on the command line.

Now loading drivers on the command line sounds much more like Linux than OS X.

I would like to friendly encourage the folks at RME to find a solution on how to TotalMix on Linux. Actually it might be quite a lot already if there was a documented way of communication with the hardware mixer – given the communication allows for using all features of the hardware.

TotalMix is a huge selling point to my opinion. If you have to bring your own monitor mixer for mobile recording, it's easier to buy some digital console with integrated USB or DANTE interface altogether, not needing RME products at all then. I put this old Fireface 400 in a 9,5" rack together with a QuadMic and a used MindPrind DI Port for two more inputs and one more headphone output. And of course I use TotalMix for the headphone mixes in recording. It's the coolest h.andbag one could own, this 9,5" rack. But without TotalMix, I wouldn't be half as useful.

Somehow this thing is time to move on if RME doesn’t want to take it forward. But how?
