Topic: Problem in Logic (and only Logic)

Howdy RME folks!

I've spent an unfortunate amount of time troubleshooting an issue between my MK1 Babyface and Logic, and I confess I'm running out of ideas, so I figured I'd give this forum a shot.

I’m a multi-DAW user (Bitwig, Ableton, and Logic), so it’s worth noting that the following issue ONLY happens with Logic. All my other DAWs, as well as Mainstage, are working exactly as I would expect.

Here’s the issue:
If I have the Babyface connected to my iMac, Logic goes into beach ball dance for about 2 minutes after about 2 seconds of normal operations, and this cycle continues until I either force quit Logic or unplug the Babyface.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far, none of which fixed the issue:

  • Changing audio in/out to bypass the Babyface while it’s plugged in.
    Plugging the Babyface into various USB ports
    Removing other devices from USB ports
    Working with an empty project
    Deleting all Logic preferences and rebooting
    Reinstalling Logic and rebooting
    Rolling back to the 10.4.4 version of Logic
    Updating Babyface drivers and firmware (v3.16 and v255)
    Using an Aggregate Device interface
    Doing a full shutdown cycle
    Using Disk Utility to check my drive (everything is ok)
    Various prayers and chants

During this time period, all my other DAWs, and Mainstage, have worked perfectly with no slowdowns or any other problems. The issue is isolated to Logic.

So...any suggestions? Thanks for your help in advance! You’re my heroes!

Also, for the record, here's the computer stats:

Computer: iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
Processor: 4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4 GB
OS: OS X Mojave 10.14.5

Start to trash your Logic Prefs.

Yeah, I’ve done that quite a few times now. Sadly with no success. Appreciate the suggestion though!

Did you try with GarageBand ?
Logic and GarageBand are sharing the same audio engine.
And what about your settings in Logic ? Witch buffer size are you using ?

Garageband is having the exact same issues as Logic, it turns out. Good idea to heck that out.

I've moved the buffer around just for testing purposes, but it's not causing any problems.

I've updated my Mac to 10.14.6, uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled the drivers, and unfortunately i'm still having the same issues.

Thanks to some awesome support from the RME USA folks, I got this sorted out. It came down to an issue Logic, and weirdly only Logic/GB, had reading my ADAT clock. So, if anyone out there has a similar issues either:

Try flipping the order of your clock sync

or

Contact RME support. They did an excellent job helping me out. Hard to get that kinda help these days, and it's the kind of help that retains my business.
