Topic: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

Hi! I have the following case:
I have UFX+, which is my main audio interface. I am planning to buy RME ADI-2 Pro FS to have a pair of top-notch AD/DA channels, which I plan to connect to UFX+ via one of the digital connectors.

I am planning to use ADI-2 Pro FS for recording a clean guitar for further reamping, which should work the following way:

Guitar -> Preamp -> "In-1" of Adi-2 Pro FS  --- then signal is split:
a)  ADI's "In-1" routed to ADI's digital output -> UFX+ -> computer for recording the clean guitar
b)  ADI's "In-1" routed to ADI's analog output -> reamp box -> amp -> cabinet

Chain #b should work like direct monitoring, without leaving the box and introducing any significant latency (a few samples like direct monitoring in UFX+ is fine).

Question:   is it possible to do that?

I implemented the same thing with UFX+, and it works like a charm, but I am wondering whether I can achieve the same thing with Adi and route the input signal to two outputs (digital out, analog out) simultaneously.

Question 2:
Can ADI's analog output can use two sources simultaneously: analog In and digital In?
I need this to be able to avoid reconfiguring ADI's source when I switch from recording guitar to reamping guitar from prerecorded guitar DI track from my computer (it should be played from DAW through UFX+, which sends the digital signal to ADI).

The second case is also easily implementable on UFX+, but wondering whether it is implementable if we bring ADI into the picture.

As a matter of fact, both cases are solvable if ADI allows multi-source/multi-output internal routing the same way as UFX+ does through TotalMix. I apologize if the answer is in the manual, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks!

Re: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

I also have this combination but use it in a different way.

I dont have time to check this routing for your now, I suggest you consult the manual what routing modes are possible.
See chapter 17 Modes, its quite easy to understand text / diagrams.

Latencies you can calculate based on the manuals as well.
See how I did this for different setups that I owned so far in this blog article:

https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/index.php/Attachment/2343-UFX-UFX-RayDAT-Latencies-v2-jpg/

I am mostly recording now with Durec in "tape deck mode" and import the files later into cubase.
I am using the UFX+ as parallel effect loop for my Marshall which has only a serial effect loop.
By this I retain much from the original dynamic and punch of the preamp signal.
I am about writing a blog article about that but its not yet finalized.
But the use cases and cabling I described already here in this article:

https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … arren-Rig/

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe it inspires you to get new ideas for new use cases of this phantastic equipment.

Re: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

Thanks for the info. However, this indeed a bit different from what I am interested in. I have zero problems with routing UFX+ the way I want. The problem is particularly to make it work with ADI-2 Pro FS as an extension of UFX+ to take advantage of its nice converters.

Thank you for the hint on diagrams, they definitely give some additional context which is not explained in the text.

Based on what I see in the AD/DA Mode, the anwer to my Question #1 is yes, as signal coming from Analog In 1/2 is split to Digital Out and Main Output, and thus, we can simultaneously record it via digital channel and pass through with "zero" latency to analog out to feed into a reamper.

But for Question 2 it seems the answer is no, as there should be pre-selected whether Analog Out gets signal from Analog In  OR  Digital In. That's bad, as it will require manual switching the settings to receive signal either from guitar for tracking, or from digital input for reamping.

If somebody could confirm my understanding it would be greately appreciated.

Re: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

No indeed not possible without switching, but I really doubt this is useful anyway. The ADI for very high end monitors might make some sense, but even then I doubt highly if there will be any audible difference with the ufx+, which is very good. But for reamping it is certain there will be no difference at all. Dynamic range, frequency response and distortion levels of a guitar are not demanding at all.

Re: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

What is possible is to always set the ADI to output digital and send the analogue audio through totalmix on the UFX. This will only add a few samples maybe less as the mixer in the ufx does not go through the computer and is very low latency (2 samples I remember)
And this is the exact same latency as through the UFX without ADI as you are doing now.!!!!

Re: Question on routing and realtime monitoring for ADI-2 Pro FS

Thanks for the comment. Don't get me wrong, UFX+ is an awesome interface, and there is nothing bad with how it sounds, though ADI is the top-notch converter, and I hope to use it for the described use case as well as some others (e.g. I have outboard hardware which I occasionally want to use), and I expect this to be an incremental improvement over UFX+.

Your idea on sending Analog In to the Digital Output, then route it back via UFX+ to ADI's Digital Input and the send to the Analog Out might actually work, based on the diagram. Thanks for the great idea.

And it will exactly have the same (lack of real) latency is if the adi had an onboard (mini totalmix) mixer!
And of course I understand why you want to upgrade. It is just that most of us can spend money only once and different purchases might have more impact then this one (like new strings LOL, always surprised what that does)
