I lead you on the wrong path, sorry, as I’ve only seen the typical one-piece rubber-foil-button remotes in the last decade.
This rubber part isn’t a “protection”, it’s just an inexpensive way to have a multitude of switches manufactured at low cost.
The rubber tends to “sweat” an oily substance, that can be removed from the rubber and the circuit board contact areas by acetone, after separating the remote’s parts.
As mentioned by @MC, ADI-2 IR Remote got the much more quality metal switches inside (could have noticed by myself by the click-response!).
Trying to use solvents on these would kill the remote so DON’T do that!
