I have watched the tutorial videos several times and generally understand the workflow of Totalmix, but I must be missing something as I'm struggling to achieve what I want.

I use Cubase 7.5 and have set up some "Hardware Effects". The routing as far as cables/interface I/O is all correct.

I'll use an example scenario:

Channel 5 - Mono compressor
Channel 6 - Mono compressor
Channels 7/8 - Stereo EQ

As you'd expect with an insert, I want to hear the dry signal when the plugin is in bypass, and I want to hear the full wet signal when it is active.

Instead, I seem to have to change back and forth between monitoring the Cubase master bus output and monitoring only the return signal of the hardware chain (so I don't hear both at the same time).

Can a Totalmix expert PLEASE help me out with step by step instructions? I am sure there must be hundreds of people utilising hardware inserts, (doesn't matter if you use Cubase or not as all DAWs that support inserts work the same way pretty much).
