Topic: Mystical problem with TotalMix FX and OSX

Hi.

I have really strange problem: TotalMix won't start up most of the time (it starts up something like 1 time out of 50 without any clear reason i can think of).

OSX 10.9.5 (Mac Book Pro)
Babyface
Firmware: v223
Driver: v2.10
TotalMix version: 1.12 MAC OS X (1)

Everything have been fine so far about 3 years with my Babyface. But now after session with Fireface 800 the TotalMix FX won't start up with my Babyface anymore. I have been removed all RME software and reinstall everything with latest drivers but still it won't work. Mystical is that now it have started few times ok but then when shutting down and try to start again it only crach...

Update:

Ok now it goes like this: first when i connect my Babyface nothing happens and task manager says that TotalMix FX not responding, but if I wait for 5 minutes it just gets alive and start working. But it shouldn't work like that. It should start up right away without waiting for minutes... It used to be plug and play until yesterday.

Mystical problems need mystical solutions...

Try this: plug your Babyface in. Note the exact time. Wait for Totalmix to appear, note the time again and don't use your Mac while waiting.

Next, open up the Console app, from Applications/Utilities/
Find the time you plugged in the Babyface and copy all lines till the end. Post these here.

I suspect one of Apple's extensions is trying to prepare a Time Machine backup, indexing Spotlight data, or sending stuff to the cloud. Could also be something like DropBox or Soundflower. But the Console errors will usually tell what software is blocking Totalmix.

Hi cyrano,

Am having exactly the same problem as Mikael describes, but with a Fireface UC - this has only started happening since I downloaded a driver for an old FireFace 400, which I have since completely uninstalled, although Totalmix still takes around 5 minutes to load

I also completely uninstalled Soundflower, but no luck there...

Anyway, below are the lines from Console.
The exact time I plugged in the Fireface was 12:56:02, and TotalMix finally loaded around 13:01:06

Any help would be much appreciated!

MIDIserver is crashing, restarting, crashing...

I have no idea why, cause I don't use MIDI.

If your RME driver, firmware and OS are up to date, try deleting caches.

The easiest is to download a tool like Cache Cleaner from Northern Softworks:

http://www.northernsoftworks.com/

See if that helps. Possibly some part of the old drivers is still around (a plist that misleads launchd into starting something old).

If you are at ease with the Terminal, it's even simpler:

sudo purge

will also do it. Reboot immediately after, of course.

If your system software is an upgrade version, it might be time for a clean install. In that case, it's wise to make a clone on an external disk, with Carbon Copy Cloner or Disk utility. To do it with Disk utility, you need to start your machine from other media. You could use the Recovery partition, but that only has a command line version of Disk utility.

This is an OSX bug, triggered by an Intel bug. You'll see this a lot if you look for it:

There is no single fix for it...

We do not see this error on our machines. Here are some steps to try:

- delete and rescan the MIDI configuration in Audio MIDI Setup

- in Finder first copy (backup of TM FX settings) then delete the folder /User/.../Library/Preferences/RME TotalMix FW and the file de.rme-audio.TotalmixFX.plist

- in case MIDI is not needed at all: under  "/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers" delete the FireWire MIDI driver "Fireface MIDI.plugin". No problem as it will be back with a driver reinstall. You could also delete the USB 3 driver MADIfaceUSB3MIDIDriver.plugin.

Please report back if one of these help.

It seems that deleting the "de.rme-audio.TotalmixFX.plist" and "Fireface MIDI.plugin" has done the trick so thank you MC
