Topic: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

Hi,

I tried a new connection method for my ADI-2 Pro (usually connected via ADAT to UFX+).
This time I connected ADI-2 Pro via USB.
In Cubase 9 I have now the MADIface Series ASIO driver v0.9590 in use and can access UFX+ and ADI-2 Pro.

In Cubase control room I defined Phones using the 2 analog outputs of ADI-2 Pro.
ASIO Buffer Size for UFX+ and for the ADI-2 Pro: 64

Problem: after approx 10 min of playing back a project I am getting grizzeling noise that becomes
exponential more and more severe until getting an distorted sound.

Stopping and restarting playback doesn't solve the issue.

Bug ?

How are they synced? If not that is the issue. If yes no idea ;-)

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

The ADI-2 Pro is still connected to the UFX+ via ADAT cable.
Clock Source is set to AUTO.
The State Overview shows Clock Source: SPDIF.
If SPDIF also covers ADAT then I would say its synched by the UFX+ via ADAT.

Funny is that I could reproduce it also a 2nd time after a reboot of the PC.
In both cases (before and after reboot) the 2 Octamic XTC, connected to the UFX+ via MADI, were powered off.

Now I powered on the 2 XTC to record the distortion (as the mics are curr. connected to XTCs) and repeated the test.
But now all runs stable since much longer time (~30 min).

TBH .. I do not know at the moment
- whether the issue is always reproduceable, as I just discovered it or
- whether there is a relationship to the 2 XTCs connected via MADI, whether its power status (on or off)
  could also impact synchronization.

EDIT: if I configure clock to be internal on ADI-2 Pro, then distortion happens slowly again.
Then I changed back to Auto. At the moment dropouts still occurr, waiting now whether it comes to distortion again.

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

There are two pitfalls:

- make sure both interfaces have the exact same buffer size set in the Settings dialog. These are not automatically synced so need to be set manually to the same value.

- Make sure they run on different USB ports. The UFX+ consumes all the resources of an Intel USB 3 port already. Using a hub to also operate the ADI-2 Pro on that port will fail. You need to find a 'free' one.

If you see the error again:

- check that the SP sign in the status bar is white, not red (unsynced)

- check the Settings dialog about USB errors

Edit: Changing clock: if you do that the internal buffer position is wrong. You need to restart ASIO for correct operation.

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

Thanks Matthias for your suggestions, I tried all but it doesn't change the situation.

I ensured that the ASIO Buffersize of UFX+ and ADI-2 Pro are set to the same value, currently 128

The ADI-2 Pro is in USB Multichannel Mode and connected
- to the UFX+ via ADAT IN (and now also OUT) and gets for the input "SP op" a lock @ "44.1" state "adat" Bit "16"
- to the PC via USB, I tried both USB3 and USB2

The SP sign in the status bar is always white, never Red.
The ADI-2 Pro alone has no issues. Only if the 2 devices are operated together !!!

In regards to the USB connection .. My Supermicro X10-SRi-F mainboards chipset (Intel C612) offers:
- 4 x USB3, only the 2 on the back being in use for UFX+ and ADI-2 Pro and
- 8 x USB3, only 4 in use, 2 on the back for mouse and keyboard and 2 for eLicenser/iLok2 (via "Slotblech")

UFX+ and ADI-2 Pro are connected directly to the USB2/3 ports on the mainboard/PC, there is no hub in between.

Here a list of USB ports on mainboard and my assignment:
I only use
- 2 of the 4 USB3 ports
- 4 of the 8 USB2 ports

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

You seem to have overlooked the one USB error with the UFX+ and 6 USB errors with the ADI-2 Pro. Looks like you need to find a different USB port for the ADI-2 Pro...this is the stuff that can not be fixed by driver and firmware updates...

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

Hi Matthias, thanks for the hint wink

Maybe this came from using an USB3 extension wire for the ADI-2 Pro.
Now my setup should be "clean" with straight through quality USB3 / USB2 cables.

But I am gettings still issues, no matter whether I connect the ADI-2 Pro to USB3 or an USB2 port (2a, 2b below):

1. Quality USB3 cable, 3m, from UFX+ to USB3 Port
2a) Quality USB2 cable, 3m, from ADI-2 Pro to USB3 Port (the USB3 port besides the UFX+ on the back of the mainboard)
2b) Quality USB2 cable, 3m, from ADI-2 Pro to USB2 Port

This time I kept the driver settings window open and can confirm, that it has nothing todo with transport errors.

Here an example recording with Mic at the Phones, but sadly I dont get it at the point where its completely messy.
It starts with knacker very early, needs then around a minute to produce eventually a loud hissing spike like nearly at the end of this recording. But over time it then exponentially gets worse, then comes back to knackers and so this seem to repeat.

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

At the moment I have more stability.

Only the UFX+ connected to USB3.
ADI-2 Pro connected to USB2 and working now in "stereo mode".
I kept an USB Bluetooth Adapter out of the setup.

Now I need to test this a while and reenable multiple-channel mode.

EDIT 21:45

Reenabled "multi channel mode" on ADI2-Pro. No issues.
I connected now ICY USB3 4-port hub to USB3 without anything connected to it. No issues.
Connected BluRay USB Adapter to ICY USB3 Hub. Here again issues

Kept USB3 Hub empty, connected BlueRay USB Adapter to USB2 front port on the computer case.
In USB Diagnosis I see 1 | 0 | 0 error after 7 Minutes, but no issues !

Cubase Playback via Phones over ADI-2 Pro stays now stable (even with Blue Ray adaper on USB2 front-port)

I have a certain feeling that the errors were related
- to my cabling of ADI-2 Pro via USB extension cable to USB3
- connecting also the ADI-2 Pro to USB3

So its possible, one only needs to be careful
- not to overload or disturb USB3
- best not to use USB extension cables for recording interfaces
- with some USB devices like USB bluetooth adapters
- ensure to use the same ASIO buffer sizes for each of the RME devices using the same ASIO driver

From my side this issue is SOLVED, thanks for your kind help Matthias.
It runs now stable since a longer time even with the BlueRay USB adaper in the front.

Re: [SOLVED] ADI-2 Pro: distortion after 10 min together with UFX+

Entirely solved by using an additional USB 3.0 PCIe Card:

Sonnet Allegro Pro USB 3.0 PCIe with 4 dedicated Fresco Logic 1100 USB 3.0 controller.
